Yoga today - The Second Secret to Concentration

The first secret is to be able to gently pull your mind back to the object of concentration. It is the nature of the mind to drift. We must learn to consciously and gently pull the mind back. Last week we focused on happiness. Let’s sit for a moment and focus on being happy. Close your eyes and focus on what make you feel happy. Take a few breathes and enjoy the moment.

The second secret to concentration is the ability to hold your mind to the object without adding details. Remove the details of what makes you happy and just focus on happiness. You will notice that as you begin to experience happiness the mind will wander and you will begin to fill in details about the place, person and things that make you happy. Try to hold your mind onto pure happiness. Be happy independent of anything. We are attempting to isolate happiness from everything else in the universe so that we can experience pure happiness. We are attempting to separate our consciousness from the matrixes of life and gain insight into our consciousness for it is in consciousness that we have the opportunity to truly know happiness. It is not outside of you. It is found within.

Don’t worry if you struggle with this. Just gently bring the mind back to the moment and know that with practice and dedication you will soon discover the secret to happiness.

A recipe for Sex – It’s not just Vanilla

Did you know vanilla is an aphrodisiac? Vanilla is not just plain old vanilla. It has qualities that make it the most widely used flavoring. It’s expensive, second only to saffron. It is a flavoring extracted from the orchid genus vanilla which grow in Mexico. It is also cultivated in other countries.
There are three main commercial uses of vanilla; in the pod, ground and as an extract. All three are used in products. Since vanilla is every expensive often times artificial vanilla flavoring is used in baked goods and other foods. Beware of artificial vanilla- it’s just plain fake.

The major use of vanilla is in flavoring ice cream and the most common ice cream is vanilla. Therefore it developed the nick name “plain vanilla” to mean a default or common basic flavor which is not true at all. Vanilla is often times used to enhance chocolate and other flavored ice creams and foods.
Vanilla is considered an aphrodisiac.  The Aztecs used it as an aphrodisiac and in 1776 a German study gave men a medication based upon flavored vanilla, which was said to cure their impotence.

Vanilla has been used as a popular scent in Aromatherapy since the late 80s, described in 1991 by Sloan-Kettering as,
"Vanilla, a homey scent which may remind people of food, may be a preferred scent [for this stress research test]. Its recent rise in commercial popularity is well-deserved."

But is it really an aphrodisiac? When it comes to sex vanilla is often referred to as just plain old boring sex. Could this not be true? If vanilla is so expensive and if vanilla is the major flavoring that is added to other flavors to enhance them then if we add plain good old vanilla to the other flavors of sex don’t we enhance them?

Vanilla is considered an aphrodisiac because the scent of vanilla (the chemical molecules) mixes with human pheromones and enhances our scent making us more attractive to a potential sex partner. That’s why vanilla is includes in so many perfumes. Vanilla also quells the appetite for sweet foods. The scent seems to give us sweet thoughts instead of sweet cravings and sweet thought are good for sexual appetite!
Drop vanilla beans in brandy or dessert wine and let them sit for a few days. The vanilla will release into the liquor and add a delicious flavor. Drop a bean into a cup of hot coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Burn vanilla candles (make sure they are aromatherapy candle and good quality).

Or add a little vanilla to a sweet dessert and serve it to your lover. The flavor and scent will excite the sense and surely bring thoughts of sex to your body, mind and soul.

Concentration -three secrets

There are three secrets for controlled thinking or yoga concentration. Concentration is the ability to hold your mind to an objective and make that objective subjective or yours. Lets’ say you want to concentrate on happiness. It is objective or outside of you until you learn how to concentrate on it and make it you. This takes practice. It matter not how many times your mind wanders away from the object, what matters is how gently you bring your mind back to the object of concentration. The nature of the mind is the wander. The first secret is that no matter how far the mind wanders you gently bring it back. Concentration begins when the mind of its own volition holds to the object without any departure.

Let’s concentrate on happiness: Close your eyes and focus on something that makes you happy. In your mind hold your focus.  Breathe happiness into your being. What does happiness feel like? Sit with this for a moment.

Happiness - To me is a feeling of joy and delight, and I find that when I hear the sound of laughter especially from the ones I love.

Most recently we had a family party. All of the children and grandchildren and great grandchildren were there. It was the laughter that made me the happiest.

A Recipe for Health – is Boron boring?

Is Boron a boring trace mineral? What does it have to do with your health? Isn’t it best known as Borax -- a cleanser and mineral used in the making of glass?

Boron is a trace mineral found in plants. Plants take the mineral out of the soil and give it back to us when we eat the fruits and vegetables. We cannot get our minerals directly from the soil so we are dependent upon plant life to supply us with the necessary minerals to insure health.

Boron has recently been shown to be effective in preventing bone loss and deterioration. In a US Agricultural study boron was given to post menopausal women, who were at high risk of osteoporosis. The results of the study suggest that boron works much like estrogen to help prevent bone loss. But don’t rush out and buy boron supplements. A healthy diet and a multi- vitamin should give you enough boron. Check with your primary physician if you are considering supplementing.

There appears to be no shortage of boron in humans due to only a limited amount of boron is needed and it is highly available through the fruits and vegetables we eat. Boron is a trace mineral and not an essential mineral meaning we only need trace amounts for health.

Fruits and vegetables are the best sources for boron; meat and fish are poor sources. A diet containing a variety of fruits and vegetables will supply adequate amounts of boron. One such fruit that is rich in boron is the pear. Pears contain large amounts of boron and thus pears help to prevent osteoporosis.
Besides boron, pears are an excellent source of water-soluble fiber.  They contain vitamins A, B1, B2, C, E, folic acid and niacin.  It is also rich in copper, phosphorus and potassium, with lesser amounts of calcium, chlorine, iron, magnesium, sodium and sulfur.

Some varieties have more iron content than others.  This can be seen when a cut pear turns brown.  If it doesn't turn brown, it means that the iron content is very low or non-existent.

In Greek and Roman mythology the pear was sacred to Pomona the  Roman goddess of gardens and trees. In Europe it was customary to plant fruits trees when a couple got married. The longevity and fruitfulness of the trees were thought to give strength to the marriage and children. As each child arrived, an apple tree was planted for every boy and a pear tree for each girl.

Somehow, boron doesn’t seem so boring when you bite into a fresh succulent pear and partake of all the wonderful nutrients that nature so aptly provides. If we let her; Mother Nature will always take care of our health.

The Seven Spiritual Rays of Discernment - Who, what, where, why, which, how and when

Everything on earth sprang forth from the seven rays of light. Light is energy. It is the essence of life. According to Karma we are all here to live out our purpose and find meaning. The problem arises when we distort the pure nature of life which can only be found through the soul.

Life began from a burst of energy. Whether you call this pure consciousness, God, the Absolute or the big bang all of life began as a burst of cosmic energy. This energy burst into the seven rays of light or the seven rays of discernment. This burst created both an outer sense of reality and an inner sense of knowing. The outer separates us. It is called the ego. The inner unites us. It is known as the cosmic consciousness.
As human being we are constantly seeking meaning. It is what motivates us and gives us a sense of purpose. We all seek to discover the unity and oneness and this is what defines the soul within us. The soul is the inherent divine sense that gives us purpose, direction and fulfills our destiny.

We all take on a false sense of self. This is known as the ego. It traps us into a life of illusion, temptation and seduction. It distorts our pure view of the world. It traps us into thinking that success is in having rather than being. The soul becomes less and the physical world becomes more. This always leads to a feeling of wanting, lacking and needing.

We witness this every day in the struggles we all feel. In our distorted view of the world we get attached to things, relationships, looking good, having more and being successful. The material world limits us and thus we become stuck in our limitations and experience unhappiness and disappointment.

Every situation in life presents us with an opportunity. We can either separate and live from the ego or internalize and reconnect with the soul. If our goal is to find the inner unity in life, we will find that when we express our inherent gifts we achieve harmony and flow easily with life. The problem arises when we distort life and see ourselves as separate (the ego). This creates fear and discord.

Once we begin to consciously recognize how we distort our lives we can with concentration and commitment overcome the obstacles and begin to express our inherent gifts and thus liberate the soul and reach a state of enlightenment.

Concentrated effort to transcend the distortions of life creates peace and harmony, and in that you will discover your purpose and meaning.

To simplify – it is that place where you consciously observe the expression of yourself and learn to step back from the distortions (deceit, a greed anger and pride) and align yourself with the inner voice of the soul.
Follow along as we discover the seven rays and the discover the distortions and how to voer come them.

Concentration- the seven rays of discernment

Remember we must pay attention without tension. So begin with your eyes closed and a few deep breathes. Try to release all stress and all thoughts. Just focus on your breathe.   We will visualize an object. Once you fully visualize this object you will reach a state on concentration, the ability to fully hold one image in your mind. To do this we will use the seven rays of discernment. This can be used for any object, person or place.

Let’s envision a sun flower.

What is this? Whose flower is this?  Where is this sunflower? How does this sunflower grow? Which flower is this? (Tall, cut, growing, wild, cultivated), why is this sunflower a flower? When is it not a flower?

Facts – the sunflower opens towards the sun every day and closes at night until it is in full bloom. When is it not a flower? When it is harvested and used as a valuable food source- the oil and the seeds are very nutritious. Practice concentration – attention without tension -Look at life with a discerning eye and ask the seven questions; what, who, where, how, which, why and when. In this you will begin to discover the true nature of life.

Eat, Drink and be healthy, sexy, happy and loving.

Let’s make dinner. Tonight we are going to have a salad, ratatouille and macaroons.

Radish salad – radishes you will recall are low in calories, high in fiber, good for circulation and brain health.
1 bunch of red radishes
1 tablespoon of olive oil
2 scallions minced
2 tablespoons of fresh parsley minced
½ tsp ground pepper.
Trim radishes and coarsely grind in a food processor. Put olive oil, parsley and scallions in a small pan and heat stirring until tender. Stir in radishes and stir for about 2 minutes. Remove form heat and top with pepper.
Butter lettuce
Goats cheese
Place leaves of butter lettuce on a chilled plate with crumbled goat cheese. In the middle place a scoop of the radish mixture. Serve with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

For dinner it’s off to Provence for ratatouille
1 bunch scallions
2 small zucchini
2 medium tomatoes
1 small eggplant
1 tsp minced garlic
2 medium sized skinless/boned chicken thighs
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 teaspoons of Herb de Provence or 1 teaspoon each of basil and thyme (the Herb de Provence adds a different flavor as it is mixed with lavender. For a more spicy and less herbally taste use basil and thyme.)
½ teaspoon of crushed red pepper

Chop scallions; slice zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes and chicken into bit size pieces. Coat a medium size deep skillet with olive oil and sauté garlic and scallions until tender. Add chicken and stir for 2 minutes. Add vegetables and spices. Stir and cook for another 10 minutes or until vegetable are tender. Let sit for about an hour. Reheat before serving. Serve in bowls with a side of French bread
Serves 4
Calories appx. 223 per serving

Serve with a white wine – a Sancerre works very well with this dish.

Dessert – Bring on the macaroons! Arrange a few macaroons on a small plate. In the center place a small scoop of vanilla sorbet or ice cream. A little French ice wine from Quebec adds an extra touch.

Bon appétit!

Attention Without Tension = Achievement

Concentration means to hold your attention without tension. It takes great effort to hold your attention and then it takes strength, balance and flexibility to hold your attention without tension.

With concentration there is effort. There is conscious thought but not that of mental activity. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. It takes effort to keep your mind from wandering. It takes effort to release the body-mind from tension and stress. But notice if you begin to apply a little effort to the attention of your breath your body-mind will relax and you experience inner balance, strength and quietude.  The tension in your body-mind will be removed.

As you go about your daily life consciously choose where best to apply your attention. Hold it with inner strength, balance and flexibility and you will consciously have mastered the art of concentration. When you master attention without tension you will be able to achieve anything you desire.

Spiritual Fitness – feeling down, lost and out of sorts?

Perhaps this is simply the darkness that has come just before the light. Darkness is necessary. It teaches us to appreciate the light. Kali (the cosmic energy of darkness) reminds us to stay stable and yet flexible at the same time. These are necessary when darkness invades.

In a world full of darkness, obstacles and negativity, finding purity and health, sparks the majestic spiritual self with a power that overcomes all limitations. The body-mind is only a reflection of the health and conscious awareness of the soul. By simply observing the body-mind one can determine both the nature of one’s journey and how far down the spiritual path an individual has ventured.  As the spirit takes on the light of wholeness and holiness, the body-mind becomes the embodiment of spiritual fitness.

Just as the body-mind must attend to health and fitness if it is to enjoy a quality life, so must the spiritual self-awaken. And more times than not, spiritual awakening comes about in the depths of chaos and darkness. It is only in the dark that one can truly find and appreciate the light, and thus we plunder deep into the dark night of soul so that we may have the opportunity to experience the radiance of the light. It is only the soul that can find its way out of the dark and past the obstacles of chaos.

A Recipe for Love- a morsel of delight

A Recipe for Love – A morsel of delight
The macaron's origin isn't clear, but it may have been brought to France from Italy as early as 1533 by Catherine di Medici and her pastry chefs. Macarons gained fame in 1792 when two Carmelite nuns seeking asylum in Nancy during the French Revolution baked and sold macarons in order to support themselves. They made simple macarons from a combination of ground almonds, egg whites, and sugar. No special flavors and no filling.

It wasn't until the 1900s that Pierre Desfontaines of Parisian pastry shop and café Ladurée decided to take two cookies and fill them with ganache. Today the macaron is a delicious treat of thin, light crust followed by a layer of moist almond meringue with a center of silky smooth filling. Lucky for me and lucky for you these little love cushions are now available here in the states. Nothing tops a French meal off like a little morcea (morsel) of macaron.

On Valentine’s Day 2011, I was in French class and one of my class mates brought in boxes of French macarons to share. They came from Paulette Macaron in Beverly Hills, California. You can order them online at paulettemacaron.com. These delicious little morsels mixed well with our conversational French as we licked our fingers and continued to pass the cookies around the room. The chocolate were divine! I think I’m in love.

Macarons are made from egg whites, sugar and almond flour. Among their many health benefits almonds are good for heart: Mono-saturated fat, protein and potassium contained in almonds are good for the heart. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant and reduces the risk of heart diseases. The presence of magnesium in almonds helps to avoid heart attacks. Almonds help reduce C-reactive protein which causes artery-damaging inflammation. Almond is also a source of folic acid. They therefore help to reduce the level of homocystein, which causes fatty plaque build-up in arteries. What’s good for the heart must be good for love.

I read recently that macarons are the new dessert de jour. Cupcakes are passé. So I bought a box of macarons and served them as a dessert along with a little fruit sorbet. Light and fluffy these little treats called pets in French (meaning either little farts or little meringues- depending upon whose interpretation) brought joie de vivre to the night.

Whether a cookie or a meringue these almond delights are healthy and heavenly. Almonds have been a part of many cultures and have made their way into many dishes. The almond is a symbol of faithfulness. Making the macaron  the crème de la crème of love.

In Greek mythology,a  princess, beautiful and faithful to her prince and lover, Theseus goes down to the sea each day, hoping to see her lover’s ship returning from the Trojan War. When it does not look like the fleet will ever return, she dies of grief and is changed into an almond tree to commemorate her faithfulness.

Now that’s love….

The Secret of Concentration- how to hit your mark!

Once upon a time there was an archery contest. A fish was tied to a pole. The eye of the fish was used as the target. Many people came forth to hit the target. Each time someone came forward the judges would ask, “What are you aiming for? The contestants each said the fish. Each one missed the target. Then one archer came forward and was asked, “What are you aiming for?” He replied, “The eye. All I see is the eye.” He alone hit the target.
To hit your mark you must shut out all irrelevant and disruptive data so that you can gain the concentration needed to hit your mark. Our mark is to quiet the mind and find peace and serenity. To accomplish this we must practice balance, flexibility and strength. That is why we practice yoga.

Difficult ? Yes! Impossible? No!

Concentration is a branch of yoga – there are eight branches. The poses are one branch. Concentration is internal. It is about learning to control the mind, with attention and not tension. This is also true for the poses. Our goal is to hold the poses with attention, but not tension. This creates balance. Why learn to concentrate? Because in yoga we are trying to learn how to control the energy of the body-mind so that we can find peace and serenity.  We are trying to consciously (with attention) control our energy without creating tension. Let’s use dieting – we want to consciously control the portions we eat without creating tension. If we create tension we create cravings and this disturbs the quietude of the mind.

Sometime we need to get out of the mind and into the body and that is why we practice the yoga poses.

Self restriction is sometimes called the decent to hell. It takes discipline. History tells us that all avatars have descended to hell before they ascended to heaven. Give this some food for thought. Pay attention to your life without tension and in this you will discover peace and serenity.

Difficult ? Yes! Impossible? No!

What does the lotus flower symbolize?

Aero*boga-the way of the heart

The cover of this book has a lotus flower floating over the crown of the head.  I chose this to symbolize the meaning attached to the lotus flower.  It signifies the original nature and purity of the heart opened fully to the soul.  It is the symbol of love, compassion, passion and all other qualities of the heart.

Within Bhagavad Gita (Hindu Scripture), the quality of the lotus blossom to stay untouched through the water and dirt of the pond where it grows, symbolizes the capability of an individual to remain unaffected through all sins as well as dirt associated with worldly matters, and accomplish spiritual perfection.

Aero*boga is the journey known as the way of the heart.  Like the lotus flower the heart opens and blooms when compassion and understanding take you down the pathway of appreciation for all of life.

A Recipe for Happiness – Think Aubergine

Just say aubergine and visions of Mediterranean stews and casseroles might dance in your head. Aubergine is the French and Italian name for the eggplant. Who doesn’t just love the deep purple eggplant color which seems to compliment any skin tone and match with just about any color? And the eggplant is,well, just so funny looking it can make you laugh.

The delectable fruit is a staple in Europe and the Middle East. It is nicknamed the “mad fruit” because of its relationship to the deadly nightshade fruits such as belladonna. Because of its shape and color it was also nicknamed the “bad egg.”

Although eggplant has somewhat of a sketchy reputation and all nightshade fruits should be eaten in moderation by those with arthritis it has many health benefits. Eggplant's ample bioflavonoid may be beneficial in preventing strokes and hemorrhages. The fruit contains the phytochemical monoterpene, an antioxidant helpful in preventing heart disease and cancer. The National Cancer Institute has been researching the fruits of the nightshade family, especially eggplant, to see if they may inhibit the production of steroidal hormones that encourage tumor growth. Eggplant may also prevent the oxidation of cells that leads to cancer growth.  And if you should encounter a scorpion bite, apply raw eggplant directly on the affected area!

Now if you love ratatouille, mousaka, eggplant parmesan and babba gouache, you’ll be really happy to know that the eggplant supplies such great nutrients that not only  help to prevent disease,  but eggplant is a great addition to a dieter's menu with only 28 calories and 3 grams of sodium for 1 cup (240 ml) of boiled drained cubes. Almost fat-free, that quantity contains 0.2 grams of fat.

Although the eggplant is low in calories it is not very rich in vitamins, However, it has a plus on the mineral side. Eggplant delivers 21.4 mg of calcium, 13.0 mg of magnesium, 248 mg of potassium, and 22 mg of phosphorous.

Interestingly the body needs potassium for muscle strength and the brain needs potassium to lift one from an apprehensive mood. Calcium of coarse builds strong bones, adequate levels of magnesium have been shown to positively affect mental health and phosphorous is needed for the transport of nutrients in and out of cells. Minerals are essential to both physical and mental health.

To boost the nutritional benefits, pair eggplant with other vegetables such as tomatoes, onions, and peppers, which supply an abundance of vitamins.

Eggplants have become very popular in the U.S. and are a major source of the cuisine of both Turkey and the Middle East. Next time you see an eggplant in the grocery store smile and think of this-- There is a Middle Eastern saying that goes like this,
"To dream of three aubergines is a sign of happiness.”

Now that’s it… a recipe for happiness; found in a plump purple fruit!

Got Gut Issues? You’ll Love this!

Louisiana State Researchers reported that certain “good” bacteria in the stomach feed off dark chocolate!  The bacteria ferment the dark chocolate into compounds that are good for your heart. There are two kinds of microbe in the gut. One is “good” bacteria and the other is “bad” bacteria. When you eat dark chocolate it grows the good bacteria which are anti inflammatory. The so called bad bacteria produce inflammation which is associated with bloating diarrhea and constipation. When the good compounds are absorbed by the body they lesson the inflammation produced by the bad compounds.
So to our delight, dark chocolate gets another top mark!

Mastering Your Life

Concentration is essential. You must learn to focus and hold steady to the task at hand. Most of the time humans concentrate on something, without much thought. When you concentrate with full awareness the task gets accomplished. However, we must also know when to let go. It is wise to realize that thinking over and over (obsessing) is not problem solving. Sometimes we need to let go and return to the problem when the mind is fresh. With yoga we discipline the mind to focus and also to let go when necessary.

Concentration from the yogic standpoint means to master your mind. When you master your mind you free yourself from scattered energies. Then you apply your intellect, undisturbed by emotions and cravings. In this you free your energy, learn to focus and achieve the goals you have set for yourself in this lifetime. You become the master of your destiny.

Concentrate without obsessing and learn to let go when necessary. Sit quiet, breathe deep, refocus and then tackle the task at hand. In this you will learn to master your life.

A Recipe for Sex -- French Kiss

The French are known for many things among them the French kiss. It was the Greeks and Greek mythology that first invented the kiss of the tongues. Zeus became angry with Erato the muse of love and poetry and punished her by forcing her to kiss all men that she met with the tip of her tongue.  This was a punishment that she dis tasted. Eventually she met and fell in love with a man who she lovingly kissed with the tip of her tongue. When their tongues met their souls were kissed. The French perfected this kiss and called it the “soul” kiss. Leave it to the French to drop themselves of the puritanical burden and perfect the art of a sexy kiss.

Besides French kissing and Paris, the French have Provence located in Southeastern France. It is home to many herbs among them lavender, thyme, basil and fennel. These herbs were picked fresh from the garden and used in cooking stews and to season meats and fish.

In the 11th and 12th Century, known as the Golden Age in Provence the troubadours broke away from the Latin influence and began to compose love songs and poetry of their own. The most famous troubadour was Folquet de Marseille whose love songs were famous throughout Europe and who was praised by Danti in the Divine Comedy.

Provence has always attracted writers and artist such as Edith Wharton, Summerset Maugham, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Cézanne, Renoir and Matisse.

The cuisine of Provence is a result of the warm Mediterranean climate although the terrain is rugged making it difficult to grow produce. Hearty vegetables, goats, cheeses and fish are stables of the diet. Bouillabaisse and ratatouille come from Provence.

The native drink is Pastis, liquor that is flavored with anise. But what does this all have to do with sex and French kissing? Just smell the fragrant air with blossoming herbs of thyme, basil, fennel and lavender. Each scent relaxes, invites and excites the senses. That’s why the French created Herbs de Provence, a mixture of these aromatic herbs to tempt the body, the mind and the soul. They touch the body with nutrients such as the B-complex and vitamins A, C, and D all known to support a healthy sex system. Fennel has been used to increase the libido in both men and women. Basil was used as a dusting powder to attract lovers because of its erotic scent.

All of these herbs, basil, thyme, fennel and lavender belong to the Labiatae family Labiatae herbs are culinary which indicate their affinity for digestive processes. The scent of these wonderful herbs is invigorating, stimulating, fiery and reawakening; making them an excellent combination for stimulating the sexual urges.

Herbs and their essence touch the soul in the same way a French kiss excites the tip of the tongue with a subtle force that brings the art of cuisine and love making to perfection.

Master your life -There are six impediments

Master your life -There are six impediments

The first five are: control your emotions, slow down and take the time to relax; stop over doing everything; remove stress and take care of your health; listen within the quietude of yourself so you learn to trust your inner voice; and stop being concerned with loss or gain.

The Sixth Impediment to mastering your life is lack of proper attitude towards your body and your mind. I am not my body. I am not my mind. They are merely instruments for the expression of me. I am the self existent one. According to yoga you are an eternal soul who has taken on this body and this mind as a means of expressing your true self. Most people are ignorant of this and live their life directed by the mind and the body. But if you get quiet and really listen intuitively, you will discover the true nature of your soul and in that discovery you will find your purpose and meaning here on earth. When you express yourself from your soul you will always find happiness and peace. In this you will learn to master life. How? Get quiet and listen.

Really listen and do not be afraid or concerned. Simply listen to the voice of your soul. Remember no one can do this for you. But once you learn to listen your life will change and you will become the master of your destiny.

Many of my students tell me how much they appreciate my passion and my way of expressing and teaching yoga. I am not the best teacher. Sometimes my body will not allow me to do poses and postures and sometimes I struggle to control my thoughts and emotions. But my teaching comes from my soul. Through yoga I use my body- mind to teach. It is simply the instrument for the expression of my soul.

Control your emotions, slow down and take a little time to relax. Stop over doing everything, remove stress and take care of your health. Stop and take the time to listen to your inner voice. Stop being concerned with gain or loss and above all take care of your body and your mind. They are the instruments for the expression of your soul here on earth. You are here to learn the lessons of life and what it means to be a fully integrated being; body, mind and soul. When you realize this you will begin to master your life.

A Recipe for Health -- Dig Deep

If you want to stay healthy dig deep down into the roots of your being- circulation.  A sedentary lifestyle is detrimental to our health. Everyone knows we need to move the body to insure proper circulation, maintain strength and stay flexible but did you know that many food s can also help insure proper circulation? What’s so important about circulation?

Blood circulates throughout the body carrying nutrients to the organs, muscles and bones. This fresh blood is needed by the body to maintain health. When circulation is compromised parts of the body suffer. That’s why it is good to dig deep into your body and keeps the blood throughout the body moving. But this blood moving around the body also needs to be supplied with nutrients.
Some foods that we eat enhance circulation and some foods like heavy fatty foods inhibit circulation. One simple food that is good for circulation is full of nutrients and is very cheap to buy, is radishes. Yes, those little bunches of red roots (and sometimes black) you see in the grocery store or are so easy to grow in your garden, are packed full of nutrients.

I am one of those people, who love a fresh radish. Its peppery clean taste seems to excite the taste buds while cleansing the palette. Bite into a radish and you can feel the slight jolt of heat. That’s the radish going to work to create circulation throughout your body.

The radish is a root vegetable. It’s very low in calories; about 16 calories per 100g. However, they are a great source of anti-oxidants, minerals, vitamins and dietary fiber. Radishes are low in saturated fat and cholesterol. They are an excellent source of fiber. Radishes are an excellent source of copper, manganese and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, zinc and sodium.

They also provide a very good supply of vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Vitamin C is a water soluble antioxidant required by the body for the synthesis of collagen and collagen is needed for healthy glowing skin.
B6 is an essential vitamin that has been found to help with carpel tunnel, skin problems, nervous disorders and mucus membranes. It also has been shown to help improve depression.

Folate is another important nutrient is found in radishes. A 2010 opinion article in the New York Times states that folate may be helpful in treating Alzheimer’s disease

In one of the earliest of myths, the hero Gilgamesh goes out in search of a plant that promises to give him immortality. It is the radish that he finds. Buddhism also references the radish as a food that has deep roots. The roots of the radish are like the feeling you get when you are inspired from some deep place within to make a move within your life or to create an object of beauty.

Perhaps may-be the meaning of life lies hidden within the vegetable section of the grocery store where little radishes await to bring forth nutrients that will fire up your salad and bring goodness to the body, the mind and the soul.

Master your life -There are six impediments

The first four are: control your emotions, slow down and take the time to relax, stop over doing everything, remove stress and take care of your health, and listen within the quietude of yourself so you learn to trust your inner voice.

The fifth Impediment is concern over gain or loss. Quietly and consistently practice the art of concentration (sitting quiet without distraction).  Live your life without concern for gain or loss. In the big scheme of things there are no gains and no losses; simply lessons to be learned. For every gain in life there must be a loss and for every loss there must be a gain. Let’s say you lost all your money. How can there be a gain in that? Perhaps you needed to be humbled or perhaps it gave you insight into your sense of judgment, decision making and problem solving. In this you have gained.

Live your life without concern for gain or loss. When you see life this way you will live a healthy, happy and peaceful life. Sit quietly, unconcerned with gain or loss and simply experience the power of your breath. You will be surprised by how rapidly you will progress towards mastery of your life.
