Re Post The Sixth Impediment to Mastering Your Life

Here is the re-post from Saturday's Yoga class

The Sixth Impediment to mastering your life is lack of proper attitude towards your body and your mind. I am not my body. I am not my mind. They are merely instruments for the expression of me. I am the self existent one. According to yoga you are an eternal soul who has taken on this body and this mind as a means of expressing your true self. Most people are ignorant of this and live their life directed by the mind and the body. But if you get quiet and really listen intuitively, you will discover the true nature of your soul and in that discovery you will find your purpose and meaning here on earth. When you express yourself from your soul you will always find happiness and peace. In this you will learn to master life. How? Get quiet and listen.
Really listen and do not be afraid or concerned. Simply listen to the voice of your soul. Remember no one can do this for you. But once you learn to listen your life will change and you will become the master of your destiny.
Many of my students tell me how much they appreciate my passion and my way of expressing and teaching yoga. I am not the best teacher. Sometimes my body will not allow me to do poses and postures and my mind does not have all the answers. But my teaching comes from my soul. It comes from a place beyond my body and beyond my mind. It is the expression of my soul. Yoga and using my body and my mind to teach, is simply the instrument for the expression of my soul.

Listen to your inner voice and then follow it. In that you will learn to master your life.

Dismal 21st!

The US placed a dismal 21st in ranking the world's food systems. Based upon food quality, abundance, affordability and eating habits. High obesity and diabetes rates dragged the US down putting it behind 20 European countries and Australia.
Top honors went to the Netherlands with Switzerland and France tied for second! Viva la France!

Whenever I have been to France I have noticed that the portions are small, the food is fresh and local and obesity is almost non existent, which goes to prove you can eat a delicious diet, enjoy a glass of wine and still stay healthy!

The Middle Way

The middle way means to not become identified with anything; love or hate, happiness or depression, attachment or detachment but, simply to come back to the present moment putting aside all attachments to any position.  When we take a hard and fast position we slip from the sharp edge and risk getting hurt.  Right now one thing may be important but, circumstances will happen and tomorrow it may lose its significance.  Stay present and in the moment – that’s the middle way.

Master your life -There are six impediments

The first four are: control your emotions, slow down and take the time to relax, stop over doing everything, remove stress and take care of your health, and listen within the quietude of yourself so you learn to trust your inner voice.

The fifth Impediment is concern over gain or loss. Quietly and consistently practice the art of concentration (sitting quiet without distraction).  Live your life without concern for gain or loss. Live to be healthy, happy and at peace. Sit quietly and breathe, and you will be surprised by how rapidly you will progress towards mastery.

The Fourth Impediment to Mastering Your Life

Lack of intuitional understanding of the importance of concentration.

Intuitional understanding is found through concentration. It means to be open and sensitive to our surroundings. At the core of our being is eternal stillness. It takes practice to find this deep inner stillness. It takes concentration. When we do this we put at risk everything we have been taught, because the truth (our intuition) may be in opposition to our thoughts, beliefs and way of life.
When our sense of time, place, identity and security are peeled away we are confronted with a vast reality. It is the place of knowing beyond knowing. We need to trust ourselves if we are to truly know.
It is difficult to find and maintain this inner stillness within a stressful world. With practice, we learn to empty the mind. Intuitive understanding emerges.
With practice we begin to trust our spiritual intuition and this leads to greater self trust. If you want to master your life you must learn to trust yourself, body, mind and spirit.
Empty your mind. Free your soul and feel a sense of self trust.

The Third Impediment to Mastering Your Life

Extreme physical and mental weakness will impair your ability to concentrate. Ill health will not prohibit the learning, but it will definitely impact it. Therefore we should be very careful to reduce stress, eat healthy, exercise, rest and play. A balanced and healthy life is a sure way to mastering it. But what if illness should strike?

Pull back to your center, close your eyes and breathe. The gentle soothing movement of your breath will do much to nourish your body and your mind. The body-mind needs oxygen and nourishing blood flow to support health. Doing yoga poses and breathing will push fresh blood to your organs, and throughout your body.

So eat healthy, do yoga and breathe deep! Honor your health. It is the most important thing in your life. And remember that perfect health is a perfect balance of the energy known as your body, your mind and your soul.

You are a tri-part being. It would be a mistake to try and correct one part without addressing the issue as a whole; body, mind and soul.

“When health is absent wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot be exerted, wealth is useless, and reason is powerless.” Herophilies, 300 B.C.

The Reduction of Belly Fat Formula

For men the best plan is to eat sensibly and add or increase weight training. Men should lift weights three times a week combined with an eating plan of 3:2:2 which stand for 3 meals a day, 2 snacks a day and 2 or double your starch intake once a day post workout. An easy approach to eating is to think of your plate as, for every 3 bites of vegetable, take 2 bites of protein, and 2 bites of starch.

For women the 3:2:1 approach is better. 3 meals a day, 2 meals should be mostly protein and fiber, and less starch, and 1 meal should be heavier in starch. Again, when looking at your plate think, for every 3 bites of vegetable, 2 bites of protein, and 1 bite of starch. Women should also focus on stress reduction activities like yoga and tai Chi, as well as, walking and light weight lifting.
A combination of exercise which includes aerobics, yoga and weight training, as well as, stress reduction and good food choices in the right proportion will not only help to reduce belly fat, but will extend and improve the quality of your life because a healthy soul with a healthy body-mind walks a healthy path.
Don’t always have time for a full workout – give Aero*boga a try it is a combination of aerobics, yoga and light weight training that is easy and fun. In one hour you will burn about 400 calories while improving cardiovascular conditioning, strengthening bones, improve flexibility and balance and reducing stress.

The second Impediment to Mastering Your Life

Engaging in heavy daily work/play schedules that make it difficult to find the time to practice concentration. With such a fast pace moving life and over stressed for time how does one find the time to stop and practice the art of concentration?

Every day I meet people who are over worked, stressed, and exhausted. Time, which is relative, seems to be the master. But practicing concentration only takes a moment. Master a moment, and you will want more, and when you want more quiet moments, you will find the time to concentrate and acquire them.

Here is how to practice a moment of quietude.

In my yoga class we do the sitting Zen. This only takes about thirty seconds. We stop and sit in Lightening (thunder bolt) Bolt or the Zen Pose. The pose is formed by a kneeling position with the tops of the feet on the floor and the buttock resting onto the heels with the knees touching each other. We then place our hands in our lap using the challis mudra. Place one hand on top of the other, making a cup, with the tips of the thumbs touching. This symbolizes being at peace and being content, and in that our cup is always full.
There are more bones in the feet and hands than any other part of the body. The weight of the body is constantly pushing down into the feet. This is the nature of gravity. Zen Pose exerts pressure in the opposite direction putting pressure on the tops of the feet, relieving strain and muscle fatigue and pushing energy up into the body.
Mystically when sitting on the feet in Zen Pose the body-mind feels lifted and elevated.  Pressing the tops of the feet into the floor produces a quieting of the body-mind.  In yoga the feet are important spiritual symbols. When we sit on them we push fresh blood through the muscles and bones. Pushing fresh blood into them symbolizes a regeneration of our spiritual self. They are the foundation that supports the temple of our soul, otherwise known as the body. They both support and carry us.
We then close our eyes, clear our minds, and focus on three deep long breathes. The mind quiets, the body relaxes, and serenity is found. Remember, the mind exists in three states. Serenity is one of them.
