Difficult ? Yes! Impossible? No!

Concentration is a branch of yoga – there are eight branches. The poses are one branch. Concentration is internal. It is about learning to control the mind, with attention and not tension. This is also true for the poses. Our goal is to hold the poses with attention, but not tension. This creates balance. Why learn to concentrate? Because in yoga we are trying to learn how to control the energy of the body-mind so that we can find peace and serenity.  We are trying to consciously (with attention) control our energy without creating tension. Let’s use dieting – we want to consciously control the portions we eat without creating tension. If we create tension we create cravings and this disturbs the quietude of the mind.

Sometime we need to get out of the mind and into the body and that is why we practice the yoga poses.

Self restriction is sometimes called the decent to hell. It takes discipline. History tells us that all avatars have descended to hell before they ascended to heaven. Give this some food for thought. Pay attention to your life without tension and in this you will discover peace and serenity.

Difficult ? Yes! Impossible? No!

The Secret of Concentration

Once upon a time there was an archery contest. A fish was tied to a pole. The eye of the fish was used as the target. Many people came forth to hit the target. Each time someone came forward the judges would ask, “What are you aiming for? The contestants each said the fish. Each one missed the target. Then one archer came forward and was asked, “What are you aiming for?” He replied, “The eye. All I see is the eye.” He alone hit the target.

To hit your mark you must shut out all irrelevant and disruptive data so that you can gain the concentration needed to hit your mark. Our mark is to quiet the mind and find peace and serenity. To accomplish this we must practice balance, flexibility and strength. That is why we practice yoga.

To hit your mark you must shut out all irrelevant and disruptive data so that you can gain the concentration needed to hit your mark. Be quiet, be still and be at peace and you have hit your mark.

What does the lotus flower symbolize?

Aero*boga-the way of the heart

The cover of this book has a lotus flower floating over the crown of the head.  I chose this to symbolize the meaning attached to the lotus flower.  It signifies the original nature and purity of the heart opened fully to the soul.  It is the symbol of love, compassion, passion and all other qualities of the heart.

Within Bhagavad Gita (Hindu Scripture), the quality of the lotus blossom to stay untouched through the water and dirt of the pond where it grows, symbolizes the capability of an individual to remain unaffected through all sins as well as dirt associated with worldly matters, and accomplish spiritual perfection.

Aero*boga is the journey known as the way of the heart.  Like the lotus flower the heart opens and blooms when compassion and understanding take you down the pathway of appreciation for all of life.

A Recipe for Happiness – Think Aubergine

Just say aubergine and visions of Mediterranean stews and casseroles might dance in your head. Aubergine is the French and Italian name for the eggplant. Who doesn’t just love the deep purple eggplant color which seems to compliment any skin tone and match with just about any color? And the eggplant is,well, just so funny looking it can make you laugh.

The delectable fruit is a staple in Europe and the Middle East. It is nicknamed the “mad fruit” because of its relationship to the deadly nightshade fruits such as belladonna. Because of its shape and color it was also nicknamed the “bad egg.”

Although eggplant has somewhat of a sketchy reputation and all nightshade fruits should be eaten in moderation by those with arthritis it has many health benefits. Eggplant's ample bioflavonoid may be beneficial in preventing strokes and hemorrhages. The fruit contains the phytochemical monoterpene, an antioxidant helpful in preventing heart disease and cancer. The National Cancer Institute has been researching the fruits of the nightshade family, especially eggplant, to see if they may inhibit the production of steroidal hormones that encourage tumor growth. Eggplant may also prevent the oxidation of cells that leads to cancer growth.  And if you should encounter a scorpion bite, apply raw eggplant directly on the affected area!

Now if you love ratatouille, mousaka, eggplant parmesan and babba gouache, you’ll be really happy to know that the eggplant supplies such great nutrients that not only  help to prevent disease,  but eggplant is a great addition to a dieter's menu with only 28 calories and 3 grams of sodium for 1 cup (240 ml) of boiled drained cubes. Almost fat-free, that quantity contains 0.2 grams of fat.

Although the eggplant is low in calories it is not very rich in vitamins, However, it has a plus on the mineral side. Eggplant delivers 21.4 mg of calcium, 13.0 mg of magnesium, 248 mg of potassium, and 22 mg of phosphorous.

Interestingly the body needs potassium for muscle strength and the brain needs potassium to lift one from an apprehensive mood. Calcium of coarse builds strong bones, adequate levels of magnesium have been shown to positively affect mental health and phosphorous is needed for the transport of nutrients in and out of cells. Minerals are essential to both physical and mental health.

To boost the nutritional benefits, pair eggplant with other vegetables such as tomatoes, onions, and peppers, which supply an abundance of vitamins.

Eggplants have become very popular in the U.S. and are a major source of the cuisine of both Turkey and the Middle East. Next time you see an eggplant in the grocery store smile and think of this-- There is a Middle Eastern saying that goes like this,
"To dream of three aubergines is a sign of happiness.”

Now that’s it… a recipe for happiness; found in a plump purple fruit!

Got Gut Issues? You’ll Love this!

Louisiana State Researchers reported that certain “good” bacteria in the stomach feed off dark chocolate!  The bacteria ferment the dark chocolate into compounds that are good for your heart. There are two kinds of microbe in the gut. One is “good” bacteria and the other is “bad” bacteria. When you eat dark chocolate it grows the good bacteria which are anti inflammatory. The so called bad bacteria produce inflammation which is associated with bloating diarrhea and constipation. When the good compounds are absorbed by the body they lesson the inflammation produced by the bad compounds.
So to our delight, dark chocolate gets another top mark!

Mastering Your Life

Concentration is essential. You must learn to focus and hold steady to the task at hand. Most of the time humans concentrate on something, without much thought. When you concentrate with full awareness the task gets accomplished. However, we must also know when to let go. It is wise to realize that thinking over and over (obsessing) is not problem solving. Sometimes we need to let go and return to the problem when the mind is fresh. With yoga we discipline the mind to focus and also to let go when necessary.

Concentration from the yogic standpoint means to master your mind. When you master your mind you free yourself from scattered energies. Then you apply your intellect, undisturbed by emotions and cravings. In this you free your energy, learn to focus and achieve the goals you have set for yourself in this lifetime. You become the master of your destiny.

Concentrate without obsessing and learn to let go when necessary. Sit quiet, breathe deep, refocus and then tackle the task at hand. In this you will learn to master your life.

It takes a leap of faith

When I was much younger without a lot of money, a lot of responsibility(the single mother of two children) and not enough time or energy at the end of the day, I dreamed of three things; traveling and seeing the world, expressing my artistic soul and promoting health and fitness for the body, the mind and the soul. Here I am now taking a giant leap of faith into my soulful space, as I launch my new project.  Aero*bogo™ and my art project -The Jeanome Project.©

This is how you do it – devote yourself to something you love. Work hard, consistently and persistently, be willing to expose the raw side of yourself and be undeterred by what others may think or say. There are those that will laugh at you, criticize you and dismiss you, but more than likely those are the same people who are afraid to take the leap. I have failed. I have done remakes and retakes. However, I never stopped trying and that is the secret to having the guts to take the leap!

I’ve traveled the world, I’m expressing my artistic self and I’m promoting health and fitness. I’m following my passion -that’s Aero*boga – the way of the heart.  Follow your passion! Come on…take the leap with me!  http://www.doctorlynn.com  Enter the contest and win! Follow along as each week we work on the lessons of Aero*boga

A Recipe for Sex -- French Kiss

The French are known for many things among them the French kiss. It was the Greeks and Greek mythology that first invented the kiss of the tongues. Zeus became angry with Erato the muse of love and poetry and punished her by forcing her to kiss all men that she met with the tip of her tongue.  This was a punishment that she dis tasted. Eventually she met and fell in love with a man who she lovingly kissed with the tip of her tongue. When their tongues met their souls were kissed. The French perfected this kiss and called it the “soul” kiss. Leave it to the French to drop themselves of the puritanical burden and perfect the art of a sexy kiss.

Besides French kissing and Paris, the French have Provence located in Southeastern France. It is home to many herbs among them lavender, thyme, basil and fennel. These herbs were picked fresh from the garden and used in cooking stews and to season meats and fish.

In the 11th and 12th Century, known as the Golden Age in Provence the troubadours broke away from the Latin influence and began to compose love songs and poetry of their own. The most famous troubadour was Folquet de Marseille whose love songs were famous throughout Europe and who was praised by Danti in the Divine Comedy.

Provence has always attracted writers and artist such as Edith Wharton, Summerset Maugham, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Cézanne, Renoir and Matisse.

The cuisine of Provence is a result of the warm Mediterranean climate although the terrain is rugged making it difficult to grow produce. Hearty vegetables, goats, cheeses and fish are stables of the diet. Bouillabaisse and ratatouille come from Provence.

The native drink is Pastis, liquor that is flavored with anise. But what does this all have to do with sex and French kissing? Just smell the fragrant air with blossoming herbs of thyme, basil, fennel and lavender. Each scent relaxes, invites and excites the senses. That’s why the French created Herbs de Provence, a mixture of these aromatic herbs to tempt the body, the mind and the soul. They touch the body with nutrients such as the B-complex and vitamins A, C, and D all known to support a healthy sex system. Fennel has been used to increase the libido in both men and women. Basil was used as a dusting powder to attract lovers because of its erotic scent.

All of these herbs, basil, thyme, fennel and lavender belong to the Labiatae family Labiatae herbs are culinary which indicate their affinity for digestive processes. The scent of these wonderful herbs is invigorating, stimulating, fiery and reawakening; making them an excellent combination for stimulating the sexual urges.

Herbs and their essence touch the soul in the same way a French kiss excites the tip of the tongue with a subtle force that brings the art of cuisine and love making to perfection.

Master your life -There are six impediments

Master your life -There are six impediments

The first five are: control your emotions, slow down and take the time to relax; stop over doing everything; remove stress and take care of your health; listen within the quietude of yourself so you learn to trust your inner voice; and stop being concerned with loss or gain.

The Sixth Impediment to mastering your life is lack of proper attitude towards your body and your mind. I am not my body. I am not my mind. They are merely instruments for the expression of me. I am the self existent one. According to yoga you are an eternal soul who has taken on this body and this mind as a means of expressing your true self. Most people are ignorant of this and live their life directed by the mind and the body. But if you get quiet and really listen intuitively, you will discover the true nature of your soul and in that discovery you will find your purpose and meaning here on earth. When you express yourself from your soul you will always find happiness and peace. In this you will learn to master life. How? Get quiet and listen.

Really listen and do not be afraid or concerned. Simply listen to the voice of your soul. Remember no one can do this for you. But once you learn to listen your life will change and you will become the master of your destiny.

Many of my students tell me how much they appreciate my passion and my way of expressing and teaching yoga. I am not the best teacher. Sometimes my body will not allow me to do poses and postures and sometimes I struggle to control my thoughts and emotions. But my teaching comes from my soul. Through yoga I use my body- mind to teach. It is simply the instrument for the expression of my soul.

Control your emotions, slow down and take a little time to relax. Stop over doing everything, remove stress and take care of your health. Stop and take the time to listen to your inner voice. Stop being concerned with gain or loss and above all take care of your body and your mind. They are the instruments for the expression of your soul here on earth. You are here to learn the lessons of life and what it means to be a fully integrated being; body, mind and soul. When you realize this you will begin to master your life.

A Recipe for Health -- Dig Deep

If you want to stay healthy dig deep down into the roots of your being- circulation.  A sedentary lifestyle is detrimental to our health. Everyone knows we need to move the body to insure proper circulation, maintain strength and stay flexible but did you know that many food s can also help insure proper circulation? What’s so important about circulation?

Blood circulates throughout the body carrying nutrients to the organs, muscles and bones. This fresh blood is needed by the body to maintain health. When circulation is compromised parts of the body suffer. That’s why it is good to dig deep into your body and keeps the blood throughout the body moving. But this blood moving around the body also needs to be supplied with nutrients.
Some foods that we eat enhance circulation and some foods like heavy fatty foods inhibit circulation. One simple food that is good for circulation is full of nutrients and is very cheap to buy, is radishes. Yes, those little bunches of red roots (and sometimes black) you see in the grocery store or are so easy to grow in your garden, are packed full of nutrients.

I am one of those people, who love a fresh radish. Its peppery clean taste seems to excite the taste buds while cleansing the palette. Bite into a radish and you can feel the slight jolt of heat. That’s the radish going to work to create circulation throughout your body.

The radish is a root vegetable. It’s very low in calories; about 16 calories per 100g. However, they are a great source of anti-oxidants, minerals, vitamins and dietary fiber. Radishes are low in saturated fat and cholesterol. They are an excellent source of fiber. Radishes are an excellent source of copper, manganese and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, zinc and sodium.

They also provide a very good supply of vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Vitamin C is a water soluble antioxidant required by the body for the synthesis of collagen and collagen is needed for healthy glowing skin.
B6 is an essential vitamin that has been found to help with carpel tunnel, skin problems, nervous disorders and mucus membranes. It also has been shown to help improve depression.

Folate is another important nutrient is found in radishes. A 2010 opinion article in the New York Times states that folate may be helpful in treating Alzheimer’s disease

In one of the earliest of myths, the hero Gilgamesh goes out in search of a plant that promises to give him immortality. It is the radish that he finds. Buddhism also references the radish as a food that has deep roots. The roots of the radish are like the feeling you get when you are inspired from some deep place within to make a move within your life or to create an object of beauty.

Perhaps may-be the meaning of life lies hidden within the vegetable section of the grocery store where little radishes await to bring forth nutrients that will fire up your salad and bring goodness to the body, the mind and the soul.

Master your life -There are six impediments

The first four are: control your emotions, slow down and take the time to relax, stop over doing everything, remove stress and take care of your health, and listen within the quietude of yourself so you learn to trust your inner voice.

The fifth Impediment is concern over gain or loss. Quietly and consistently practice the art of concentration (sitting quiet without distraction).  Live your life without concern for gain or loss. In the big scheme of things there are no gains and no losses; simply lessons to be learned. For every gain in life there must be a loss and for every loss there must be a gain. Let’s say you lost all your money. How can there be a gain in that? Perhaps you needed to be humbled or perhaps it gave you insight into your sense of judgment, decision making and problem solving. In this you have gained.

Live your life without concern for gain or loss. When you see life this way you will live a healthy, happy and peaceful life. Sit quietly, unconcerned with gain or loss and simply experience the power of your breath. You will be surprised by how rapidly you will progress towards mastery of your life.

A Recipe for Love

A Recipe for Love
"There is no sight on earth more appealing than the sight of a woman making dinner for someone she loves."

            -- Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938)

The table is set with yellow daffodils, colorful plates, candles and sparkling champagne glasses. The lights are dimmed. The room is alive with the smell of a home cooked meal. Could love be in the air?
We begin with a salad of fresh herbal greens topped with cherry tomatoes, slices of avocado and a sprinkling of dried cranberries and sliced almonds. The salad is carefully prepared with health and taste in mind.  Love thinks about the little things that will make a meal an expression of appreciation and caring. The avocado is good for heart health and circulation. The cranberries are good for the bladder, the tomatoes and their lycopene are an antioxidant that is good for the heart and preventing cancer.

The champagne is popped and a toast is made to good health. As we begin to eat I explain the reason for each morsel on the salad. I especially mention the avocado and its sexual properties. Mention a little sex and watch a man’s expression change. He’ll put down his fork and give you a wink and then begin to search through the salad for all the chunks of avocado.

The main course is salmon poached in wine and potato and zucchini salad. On the side is a little dill sauce with a sprig of dill placed neatly over the salmon. I see the love in his eyes as he looks at the plate so neatly arranged. He knows this took thought and time. Isn’t this what love is really about?

Love at its deepest level understands, cares, appreciates and does for another things that wouldn’t be done for anyone else. Love understands moods and preferences. Love cares about safety and welfare as well as happiness. Love appreciates the totality of humanness. Love doesn’t look for perfection. Love understands that we are all a little imperfect and vulnerable. Love protects and love makes sure health and welfare are the primary focus.

Cook a meal with thoughtfulness and you will have a recipe for love.

Here is another crazy diet plan that will make you howl!

“The werewolf diet—also known as the moon diet or lunar diet—may help you lose two to six pounds in a single 24-hour period and offers additional dieting advice that follows the phases of the moon. Celebrities such as Demi Moore and Madonna have reportedly followed this diet, according to Grazia.

Although it's up to you whether you want to run about in the forest and howl at the moon while following the werewolf diet, the main rule consists of a simple 24-hour water or juice fast during the full moon and new moon phases. This simple diet has the potential to help you lose up to 6 pounds in 24 hours, although it's more common to lose 2 or 3 pounds. At least some of this is water weight, but some of it is fat, too. If you need to be down a few pounds to fit into that dress tomorrow, this could be the perfect vehicle. And if you do it consistently with every cycle of the moon, you could easily stave off weight gain and even lose weight slowly over the course of a year depending on your other eating habits. By following the extended moon
diet plan that covers all phases of the moon, you could lose even more weight.”

Now commons sense tells you that if you fast on nothing but juice for 24 hours you will lose up to 2 pounds whether the moon is full or not. However, when making potions such as Doctor Lynn’s Nectars the herbs are always put up on the full moon to extract the essence from the herbs and plants. The moon does draw energy. We know this by the tides.

“According to the theory of the werewolf diet, the moon exerts the same influence on the water in your body as it does on the oceans and tides. Therefore by fasting according to the phases of the moon your body may respond even more powerfully by flushing excess water and toxins from your body. Eating according to the phases of the moon, as recommended in the extended moon diet, may also aid weight loss.”

I am often asked about fasting. A 24 hour fast sometimes can help to cleanse the body and you will lose about 2 pounds, but as soon as you resume eating the pounds will come back. Nothing wrong with a daylong juice cleanse before a party or simply to cleanse and rest the digestive tract. Extended fasting is not healthy. The body requires nutrients and calories to stay healthy. A better approach would be to eat healthy with moderate portions. Losing and then maintaining weight is more about changing your lifestyle, than it is about continuing to diet.

But if the werewolf in you can’t resist giving a good wail to the full moon, a day of fasting might be just the quick fix for you!

Off to Aspen- here is what I am looking for…

I am looking forward to seeing the wild flowers. The Maroon Bells in Aspen offer a ride through nature with plenty of wild flowers to be seen. Sometimes a breath of freshness can come from stopping to enjoy the wildflowers in nature. The sight, the smell and the feel of something sure pure, so beautiful, and so innocent reminds me to take a breath and enjoy the moment.

If you have never really experienced a wild flower, by this I mean gotten close enough that you could almost become the flower,(the feel, the smell and the sight of it), I might suggest you give it a try. If you have had a moment transfixed by the beauty of a wild flower, then you know exactly what I mean when I tell you it is good to stop and smell the wild flowers!

Pictures to follow!

The Fourth Impediment to Mastering Your Life

Not Understanding the Importance of Intuition

Understanding intuition means to be open and sensitive to our surroundings.

We accomplish this by finding quietude. At the core of our being is eternal stillness. It takes practice to find this deep inner stillness.   In this stillness we put at risk everything we have been taught because the truth (our intuition) puts us in opposition to our every day thoughts, beliefs and way of life.

When our sense of time, place, identity and security are peeled away we are confronted with a vast reality. It is the place of knowing beyond knowing. We need to trust ourselves if we are to truly know.

It is difficult to find and maintain this inner stillness within a stressful world. With practice, we learn to empty the mind and listen to our inner voice. Intuitive understanding emerges. This leads to self trust. (This is why we practice yoga.) ☺

If you want to master your life you must learn to trust yourself, body, mind and spirit.

Empty your mind. Free your soul and trust your inner voice.

The Two Questions

Who am I and what am I doing here? Bkakti the yoga of devotion

If the questions are asked with sincerity and thoughtfulness, they open up our inner desires and allow us to express our bare emotions without fear.

Whatever our desires, when we harness the energy of our emotions towards a chosen end, we move energy through our nervous system, into the sacral and up through to the heart.  This energy electrifies the body-mind.  Then our desires express themselves deep within the silence of our soul.  This is when things happen and answers come to us.  Once we open, we then desire to energize, and finally connect.

This connection to life is who you are and why you are here.

A Recipe for Happiness -- Go Fishing

Got the blues? Need a little happiness lift? Eat your omega -3 fatty acids or fish that is! When we think of eating fish we think of heart health but fish high in omega-3 fatty acids also appears to help with mild forms of depression. Studies indicate that omega-3 fatty acids may help alleviate some of the symptoms of mild depression. When subjects were given omega-3 supplements along with their anti depressants there was a slight improvement in mood. Furthermore omega-3 fatty acids appear to be helpful with attention deficit disorder.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for human health. The body does not produce omega-3 so we must get them from our diet. Salmon and other cold water fish are an excellent source as well as flax seed oil and bean oils. I preferred flax seed oil as the fish oil gives me an after taste.

But can that little pink salmon sliver of essential goodness really bring us happiness? Well just ask a bear during salmon season or river dwelling people who have depended upon the salmon’s return each year.
Salmon typically (depending upon the particular species) spend one to five years in the open ocean where they sexually mature. Then they make the great migration back to their birth place to spawn. The exact understanding of how they do this is not fully understood but scientist believes it has to do with their keen sense of smell. Seems the olfactory system (sense of smell) locks into the memory system the exact route back home.

Now that’s a happy thought for someone like me who has no sense of direction. If I could just smell my way home I wouldn’t need to learn how to use that navigation system. I could be anywhere, anytime and simply smell my way back. Now I wonder; if I eat lots of salmon will I improve my smell brain and thus my sense of direction?

So tonight I decide to make salmon for dinner and give it a test. Will the thought and the smell of fresh poached salmon send my husband running home with amorous thoughts? Would it make us spawn? No that’s another thought – let’s just stick with happiness.

Ancient mythology tells us that Salmon was associated with wisdom and venerability. In Celtic mythology fish and more specifically salmon were consulted for their wisdom and eaten so that the wisdom would be imparted upon the hero. It was believed that the Salmon ate the nine hazelnuts of wisdom, the primary source of wisdom in Celtic lore. The Salmon is associated with prophecy and inspiration because of its ability to find it distance spawning grounds.

The Salmon’s flesh is pink, although sometimes white. The Atlantic salmon tends to be farm raised where the Pacific salmon tends to be wild. I live on the Pacific Ocean which makes me only too happy to eat the salmon on the West Coast. Artificial chemicals do affect mood.
Pink is a color that has a soothing effect. It is said to reduce anxiety, calm frazzled nerves and relieve stress. Pink is emotionally comforting. It makes us feel happy. Eat Salmon and be happy!

The Third Impediment to Mastering Your Life

The first two are – quiet the monkey mind and stop overdoing everything in your life. Slow down, take a breath and smell the roses.

The Third Impediment to Mastering Your Life

Extreme physical and mental weakness will impair your ability to concentrate. Ill health will not prohibit the learning, but it will definitely impact it. Therefore we should be very careful to reduce stress, eat healthy, exercise, rest and play. A balanced and healthy life is a sure way to mastering it. But what if illness should strike? Pull back to your center, close your eyes and breathe. The gentle soothing movement of your breath will do much to nourish your body and your mind. The body-mind needs oxygen and nourishing blood flow to support health. Doing yoga poses and breathing will push fresh blood to your organs and throughout your body.
So eat healthy, do yoga and breathe deep! Honor your health. It is the most important thing in your life. And remember that perfect health is a perfect balance of the energy known as your body, your mind and your soul.

You are a tri-part being. It would be a mistake to try and correct one part without addressing the issue as a whole; body, mind and soul.

“When health is absent wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot be exerted, wealth is useless, and reason is powerless.” Herophilies, 300 B.C.

Aero*boga - The Two Questions

The Questions:Who am I and What am I doing here? Aero*boga

Bhakti is about you and how your desires, practices and experiences play out as you go about your everyday life. What we really are seeking is the highest truth and our highest ideal and how to apply those attributes to our life. This is where the questions come into play; who am I and what am I doing here?
