Yoga Today ~ I am becoming a #recluse - #time is all we have

A recluse is defined as a person who lives a solitary life and tends to avoid other people. Corona Virus certainly has made me a recluse. Normally I am very social. My days are full of human interactions. I enjoy my friends, my students and my family, but these days I am like everyone else; in social isolation.

I’ve forgotten what day it is and time simply slips by like a wave or a whisper; not really heard; not really counting for much. I am in an existence that seems to be going nowhere and at the same time I seem to be everywhere. Although I have retracted into my own little world the world at large meets me every day through the news. I didn’t choose to be a recluse, but I must admit I am getting used to being alone. It reminds me to be present and in the moment; as the saying goes; be here now.

Be here now is a familiar phrase, but its true meaning often eludes us. It reminds us that the present is the only moment from which things happen. You cannot prepare yourself for the uncertainty of the next moment, or all the moments that will follow. Corona Virus has taught us that. (Be focused like the warrior)

If you expect something to happen in a certain way you will position yourself to deal with it. But if it should happen or come at you from a different direction you will need to reposition and in the time it takes you to reposition you will lose your balance. To be here now is to be prepared to move in any direction as the moment dictates. That is why it is important to stay centered and balanced. (Do a tree)

 Reclusiveness has its benefits.

You get less pressure and stress from the world and more control over your life. Your perceptions and attitudes begin to change. What seems important at this moment might be meaningless in the next. Just look at the empty paper good shelves in the stores. This tells us much about human nature. (Humble warrior)

With time you become more independent and your life can be more peaceful. You can limit your interactions with toxic people and situations, and you get quality time to yourself and with your family. But being a recluse also has its downside.

You can get bored, lonely, there’s less emotional support from others, no one is there to help you and intimacy fades. Gone are the friendly hugs, daily smiles and moments of quiet sharing. (Fold into child’s pose and give yourself a big hug)

Becoming a recluse I am not trying to avoid people, but I am becoming very adept at keeping myself busy. I’m not bored or lonely, but I do miss the laughter and comradery of my students and friends. I think its Monday but it feels like Friday; my days are all mixed up!  Time, the only thing we really have, is shifting our view of things. The days are irrelevant, but the moments are precious.

In yoga they say liberation lies in the interval between thoughts. In our mind one thought follows another without interruption until we link our thoughts together creating a chain of emotion that often binds us into chaotic frenzy. When emotions arise, and they will, close your eyes and take a breath.

Using the sitting Zen we sit quiet in a state of contentment and peace using the three breathes to clear our thoughts, and then in the split second that follows we find infinite bliss. This is a reclusive moment; a moment of liberation.  This is just you sitting here now in the moment. This is liberation; this is peace.

Whether we are in isolation or socially active time is all we have. Use it wisely for in life you will soon discover that time flies whether you are here now or lost to the chaos of the world. Being a recluse has its benefits and one of them is the ability to appreciate the only thing we really have and that is time and believe me it really flies!

Namaste~ may you go with health, happiness and peace

Authority is the Seventh Treasure

Authority means to have the power or right to give orders, to make decisions and to enforce rules of order. This is truly a treasure of great importance for it has the power to create or destroy depending upon ones moral and ethical underpinning.

Orders, decisions and rules of conduct based upon good and sound morals and ethics is the basis of a prosperous society.

We all have some level of authority. Mostly it is the authority we have over our own conduct; our perception and attitudes.  How we decide and enforce our conduct runs counter to our moral and ethical point of view.  So although we often think of authority as someone with great power it is a treasure we all share.   How we use it determines whether we prosper or not.

Authority means the power to make and implement rules of order.  Whether it is the head of a household or the head of a nation rules must be followed. Leaders must lead and people must follow proper modes of conduct if any group small or large is to prosper. The problems happen when authority and power is misused because of greed, deceit, anger and pride. The four great passions will lead to destruction if not tethered by ethical and moral codes of conduct. Never forget that life has a perfect accounting system. Nothing goes unbalanced or unnoticed. The laws of karma state that for every cause there will be an effect. Life becomes what life does.

Authority brings with it a great responsibility. Someone of great authority is often known as an expert and therefore holds great knowledge. This knowledge often grants power, prestige and position.  Authority also means to have the legal and formal rights to give orders and make decisions. How we use this authority determines whether a person, family, group or society prospers or not.

Just remember, we all have the treasure of authority. Every day we make decisions and enforce rules of order. How we use this treasure determines whether we prosper or not. The moral duty of anyone in a place of power and authority is to make the world a better place by making those who they have power and authority over, healthy, happy and safe. Their happiness and welfare then becomes the authoritarian’s happiness and welfare. When this happens everyone prospers. Authority is truly a great treasure. Use it wisely.

#Yoga Today ~ #Power is the Sixth Treasure

Power is referred to as the ability to influence the will or conduct of others. It is also the ability to control and direct your energy towards your goals, as well as control over your conduct.  Power resides within the individual. It is independent and informal in nature and is derived from charisma and status. Power allows a person to influence and set an example for millions of people. On a smaller scale we have power over our children, employees, students, family members, friends and ourselves. How we use power determines our prosperity.

Power has nothing to do with accumulating great material wealth, however often times great wealth comes as the result of this treasures. Misuse of power is known as manipulation. It may gain you the upper hand temporarily, but it will at some point bring rebellion, disgust, hatred, humiliation and destruction. Think of all the powerful leaders who misused their power. All were eventually met with great opposition, defeat and death. Power at its best is used to empower others.

In these trying times look deep within the Nidhi, the container which is you, and use the treasure of power for the good of all. Yoga reminds us to always do that which creates the greatest good for the greatest many. Sometimes sacrifice is necessary in order to gain prosperity. Ultimate power belongs to those who use it to empower others. Be powerful.

#Corona Virus ~ this too shall pass

There is a Chinese proverb that says although you may amass a million gold coins, when you depart this world you cannot take with you even one copper penny. Oh how we belabor over life struggling to gain and control forgetting that the only thing we can control is our perceptions and attitudes.

We use the phrase this too shall pass to mean that difficulty and suffering will in time pass. We also call death a passing to symbolize an end. It also means great things you are experiencing will eventually fade away and be forgotten. When we lose something, especially a loved one, for a while we grieve and then we move on. That is what humans do.

This too shall pass seem to have originated with Rumi the medieval Persian poet? This thought which is so truly universal to the plight of human affairs reminds us of the perpetual movement of life from good to evil and back again.

In another telling of this phrase it was said that Solomon the Hebrew King wanted a phrase that would hold true in both good times and bad. He asked of the wise religious leaders how he could find balance between the two extremes of life. The wise leader called upon a jeweler to create a gold ring and upon it was inscribed the Hebrew letters gimel, zayin, yud, which began the words “Gam zeh ya'avor” — “This too shall pass.”

When given the ring Solomon realized that all his wisdom and fabulous wealth and tremendous power were but fleeting things, for one day he too would pass and would be nothing but dust.

Karma yoga reminds us that all of life is constantly changing, what might be important today might be meaningless a moment from now. Nothing in life is permanent except for change. It is the only constant in life. And the saying goes, “You never step into the same river twice.”

As we all try to hold onto our sanity in this time of pandemonium, remember that everything in life comes and goes; it moves up and down and constantly changes. This too shall pass and when it does remember to find the balance between extremes and in this you will discover the true meaning of life; nothing last forever.

#Yoga Today #Courage is a Treasure- find it within

Courage is seen as an attribute of good character and respect. We equate it to a mighty warrior or someone who goes to battle. Yet courage is not just about physical bravery. Courage involves the ability to speak out against injustice, to take a risk in the face of adversity, to open yourself up to the vulnerabilities of life and to believe.in your convictions even when met with mockery and contempt.

Nothing in life is ever accomplished without a dose of courage. That’s because courage is the engine of ingenuity. Attempt something new and above the mediocracy of everyday life and you will be met with opposition, criticism and ridicule. Rise above this and solider onward and you will discover the treasure of courage.

It takes courage to forgive, to be humble, and to be respectful and compassionate in a world that equates courage with brute force and domination. It takes courage to speak your mind and be true to yourself when faced with conformity. It takes courage to love and be open to vulnerability.

Courage therefore is the ability to remain strong within even when the outside world is nebulous and moving.  But the greatest use of courage is to overcome dis-couragement. Courage is the only antidote for failure and disappointment.

Our fiercest enemy is the ego. It is a mighty force and not easy to control. It takes courage to look within and find the strength to successfully manage the challenges of life.  Courage requires nothing more than simply letting go of fear. Without fear the warrior is courageous and thus the warrior conquers.

Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the conquest of it.      William Danforth (1870-1955)

#Doctorlynn.com #Wednesday Dose ~ #Coronavirus you can’t take away my #freedom!

I’m a world traveler. I pretty much come and go as I please. But Corona you have suddenly made me a prisoner in my own home.  Try and resist as much as I can I cannot overcome your wrathful might. So I look to Lakshmi the Goddess of Prosperity who reminds me to seek liberation if I wish to find freedom from the angst of your wrath. You’ve given us all such a feeling of anxiety about our present human condition. We all are beginning to feel so helpless about the state of the world.

When will I be once again free to roam and free to enjoy the everyday things I so took for granted? Now my excitement is my weekly trip to the grocery store.  I get dressed; put on make-up and of course my plastic gloves. I don’t have facemask so I might sport a bandana today.

Corona I know how to beat you and beat you I will. I’ll come to terms with your wrathful might. I must obey and give way to nature’s plight. But if I do it with acceptance and make peace with my present moment lot in life I will discover liberation; one of the goals that is necessary if I am to live a prosperous life.

Liberation means to accept things as they are and to make peace with them while at the same time knowing you have the power to change the way you perceive the world and how you navigate through it. Remember there are only two things you cannot change; your family of origin and your individuality.

Corona you may have tilted our world upside down, but the changes you have brought are not the problem.  The problem is that for most of us we live on the periphery of reality and do not understand what is happening. This instills fear. Liberation removes fear for it reminds us that we have within us the power to accept, make peace and then reach out from a  balanced and strong place to implement the one thing we have control over; how we perceive the world.

Seek the path of liberation and be free.

Potential is the fourth treasure

Potential energy, unlike kinetic energy which is energy in motion, is stored energy that exist by virtue of its’ relative position to everything else in the universe.  Just by your existence in relationship to everything else in the world you have been given the treasure of potential energy. That means you have the potential to create and your potential is only limited by how you position yourself in relationship to everything else in the world.  Self-acceptance is fundamental to discovering your potential. You are who you are so you should make the best of it. Don’t compare yourself or your life to others. Instead encourage yourself to attain your highest potential. Life is abundant with potential energy. Realize this and you will never go without.

The laws of thermodynamics tell us that energy is never lost. It simply changes form. Yoga as a science tells us that when we let go of a particular desire, the energy of that desire manifest into material form. Consciously we therefore have the potential to create or destroy. This is not a think positive proposition. It is about giving a thought the potential to manifest. Nothing in life is created without first some level of conscious energy.

Nothing can exist in actuality that doesn’t already exist as potential energy.  We could never travel to faraway lands if the potential to do so was not already there.  As humans we have the potential to create at a very high level. Our brains allow us to master the complexities of life. An insect on the other hand is limited. But it does have wings and can fly. It’s biomechanically designed to do so. However, the creative potential of our brains allowed us to build flying machines!  Who knows, perhaps someday an insect will develop the potential to write a bestselling novel!

Potential energy is not simply positive thinking or mind over matter.  However, potential energy is best served with a positive outlook. Potential exist everywhere and it is up to us to turn it into kinetic energy or material form.

For life to exist at all there must be potential energy. Even science tells us that for the material world to exist there must be the potential. Consciousness needs a vehicle, such as the brain to bring thoughts into material manifestation. But it needs nothing to exist. It is potential waiting to materialize through its relationship to everything else in the universe.

Every thought, word and deed is a manifestation of potential energy. But for potential energy to bring you prosperity it must follow this formula: have a vision + backed with desire + a well thought-out plan + persistent and consistent action = success.

You have been given potential energy as a gifted treasure. It is very powerful, but useless without conscious thought and action to bring it into fruition. Use it wisely and you will prosper.

#DoctorLynn.com ~ Daily Dose #Coronavirus You’ve given me #Cabin #fever I’m going stir crazy here’s what to do

Social isolation, kids home from school, mate getting too familiar? Feeling irritable, restless and stir crazy? You’ve got cabin #fever and with a fever worse than corona you need a good dose of immune boosting health.  Cabin fever is sometimes referred to as being stir cray which is a term derived from a word that means prison. So if you feel like you’ve been sent to prison with only short bouts of furlough remember that what you do with your time determines the health of your body, mind and soul. Focus on your health for it is truly the most valuable thing in your life.

First keep eating healthy diet. This is not the time to get sluggish from excess carbs and high fats. Keep your gut bacteria healthy; bananas, walnuts, yogurt, oats and chocolate. Yes, dark chocolate is good for the gut bacteria!

Exercise has been shown to improve immunity. Go for a walk but not just any walk. Make sure you walk up hills for aerobics and downhills for balance. Get sunshine. Vitamin D comes from direct sunshine and is essential when it comes to staying healthy. And of course do a few minutes of yoga. Try Doctor Lynn’s Functional Fitness  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1X3lfxx35DjVjItPjsN2aw

Instead of going stir crazy go stir happy. Stir up a batch of healthy treats. Get creative; post recipes on line. Start a contest – ok everyone what’s cooking? Love to hear from you!

Here’s how I’m going stirring crazy to beat cabin fever:

Angel Baby Fudge Cake

Ingredients:

·         ½ cup unsweetened applesauce

·         1 cup light brown sugar

·         8 egg whites

·         ¾ cup chocolate syrup

·         ½ cup crème de cocoa or Bailey’s Irish Cream

·         ½ cup buttermilk

·         1 tsp. instant coffee crystals

·         1 cup flour

·         ½ cup chopped pecans

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9 inch round spring form pan with non-stick spray.

Mix applesauce, sugar and egg whites with a mixer. Add next 5 ingredients mixing well until blended. Fold In chopped pecans. Pour mixture into pan and bake for 50-60 minutes until center is firm. Remove and place on wire rack to cool.

I’m walking up and down hills, doing my yoga and stirring away this crazy old Corona Virus induced cabin fever. After my isolation and quarantine from this fever I’ll be immune to the fear we sometimes get from being alone and quiet. I will realize that time alone stirring up goodness can combat any old fever. Being alone and quiet is good for the body the mind and the soul; simply  remind yourself to value this time as an opportunity to go stir crazy; making Angel Baby Fudge Cake!

What are you stirring?

#Doctorlynn.com Daily Dose ~#Coronavirus I think you’re saving the #environment?!

Corona I think you are saving the environment? You’ve got us all washing our hands, keeping surfaces cleaner, staying in our homes and using less paper and disposal products.  I am using cloth dish towels to clean my kitchen and cloth napkins instead of paper. What a novel idea!

We are not going out so we are not polluting the #environment with excess traffic. Businesses have shut down allowing the air we breathe to get a breath of freshness.

Now Corona I know you are playing havoc with the world economy, but may be in this there is an element of good. The world has been moving so fast that perhaps we all needed to slow down a bit and catch our breath. The #world will come back. It always has and always will, but sometimes it’s good to slow down, relax and let Mother Nature do the rest. After all she ultimately is the one in charge!

Breathe; oxygen is a nutrient you need as much as you need food and water. Every cell in your body depends upon it so how about putting your feet up and taking a few deep long breaths.

If you want to survive this nasty virus take care of your health, accept the circumstances, be grateful and remember with every loss there is a gain!   Love is like oxygen - too much and you get high – not enough and you die! @THESWEET   Breathe – it’s good for the body, the mind and the soul!
