#DoctorLynn.com #Monday Dose ~ #Corona Virus #Furlough #Social Isolation #YMCA #LAFITNESS @Thriveglobal

First I was put on furlough and then the Governor made it mandatory that everyone over 65 go into social isolation. Now Social isolation and furlough is not a good thing for seniors, but in this case it means something so different than the text book definition of these do devastating steps.

Furlough is a military term that means to be relieved of duty without pay until further notice. Social isolation means: Social isolation is a state of complete or near-complete lack of contact between an individual and society. It differs from loneliness, which reflects temporary and involuntary lack of contact with other humans in the world.

As a senior I’ve been banished from society!

My first reaction was shock and then I asked myself why are seniors being told to isolate? Why not tell the rest of the world to isolate since seniors are at risk? Well, it seems that isolating seniors is probably the best way to protect them for it seems #Corona prefers the mature over the young and naive.

With a cupboard full of food, the internet and Netflix I am just hunkering down for the week or two or three or however long this isolation last. But what about those who must work, help with childcare or have poor health? There is government and community help. Reach out and ask for it. Asking for help is a sign of strength and not a weakness.

Isolation can be devastating, or it can be a time to relax, rest, read, work on fun projects and connect via the internet with friend and family. In other words we have to make the best of what life hands us and always remind ourselves that there are many things beyond our control. We never know when one day we will wake up and be told the world has come to a grinding halt and is in isolation. Never forget that humans and humanity is not invincible and that something as small as a virus can destroy us faster than trade wars, embargos and pollution.

One organization that I work for, the #YMCA, has taken decisive action keeping us informed, canceling class and setting up a link to help those who are out of work get help from a loss of pay. They are even looking at ways to help pay employees for lost time. If you have not supported your local YMCA I would highly suggest it. The organization is run with a deep sense of commitment to the community and to its members and staff.

I work for a private company #LAFITNESS who has not even so much as made a public statement about what they are doing to keep the gyms clean, to help employees or to give any support. As of this time I am still scheduled to teach my classes although the Governor has asked for mandatory social isolation. Shame on a company, as big as LAFITNESS, for not taking responsible action towards its members and its employees.

So thanks to #Corona I am in isolation and on furlough until further notice while eating healthy, taking my immune booster and getting some sunshine and fresh air. I’m making the best of it all by relaxing, enjoying my time off, taking time to admire the wild flowers in my backyard and catching up on projects I let slip off the shelf. What we do with our time and the circumstances we are handed can bring either positive or negative results. I am doing what I can in my small way to help the country and the world get past this temporary blip or disruption by taking my furlough and isolating myself. It may seem small but if everyone does their part we will all survive and who knows the ending result  might be that we all @thriveglobal !

Namaste ~ may you go with health, happiness and peace

#Yoga Today ~ You are the Nidhi; the contain for the #treasure of #love -

Love is one of the treasures to be found within the Nidhi or the container which is you.

It is not something that is out there – it is within you. Love will come in many shades and in many forms. Romantic love is one kind of love, but love of family, friends, interest, work and life are aspects of love that will also fill the heart and nourish the soul. Just remember that love is not sex. It is a spiritual experience that touches the soul. Love is a precious treasure that materializes through, caring, compassion and understanding.

But remember love may come and it may go more than once in your life time. No two loves will ever be the same. Romantic love may come with a burst of powerful energy, but it will evaporate and change with time. How it changes is based upon the absence or presence of true love.    So do not think yourself unfortunate if you have loved and lost. Love comes and loves goes without reason or cause. It is whimsical and comes as it will.  If it comes enjoy it and if it must depart let it go. No amount of fretting and anguishing will bring it back.

If we mix our sexual energy with love its power begins to multiply. Calmness of purpose, judgement and balance come into play when sex and love become one. When love and devotion are mixed with sex we create the ultimate pleasurable human experience; the gift of giving and receiving pleasurable joy. But remember love and sex, as well as romance has a darker side. Envy, jealousy, resentment and revenge can turn love into hate and abuse.

Emotions are states of mind capable of taking both creative and destructive paths. When love is mixed with jealousy, envy, revenge and resentment it takes on a destructive nature. Therefore we should encourage compassion, understanding and forgiveness as the dominating thoughts in our mind and remove the destructive thoughts. The mind thrives on what we feed it – as you think so you become.  But through the process of will power we can control the mind, and then whenever a negative thought enters the mind we will find the power to change it. This brings harmony to life.  Change the way you look at things and the way you look at things changes.

Love is one of life’s’ greatest experiences. Love alone will not bring you happiness, but when mixed with sex and romance we have the ability to move beyond the finite world and into the realm of the infinite soul. Here you will discover the true nature of wealth. A rich life includes the ability to love and be loved.

Love also involves devotion. Bhakti yoga teaches us to devote ourselves to that which we love so that we might discover the true meaning of success.  Karma yoga teaches us to do what we love and success will follow. Remember love can be capricious- it can suddenly change its mood and behavior. Accept love capricious nature and make peace with it and you will discover the freedom to love without expectation. In this you will discover liberation.

In Ireland there is a church that up until several years ago held the heart of St Lawrence who fought the battle to free Ireland from oppression. Upon his death bed he asked that his heart be taken, encased in a leather case and placed in the Christ Church in Dublin to show his deep devotion and love for his country. Sadly a few years ago thieves broke in the church and stole the heart. All they left was an empty broken case. Love is a tremendous treasure. So remember to never steal or break another person’s heart.  This can turn love to hate. The treasure of love is then lost leaving behind an indelible scare. Love is a treasure – embrace it and use it wisely.

From the words of the song, Love is Like Oxygen by The Sweet – love is like oxygen too much and you get high, not enough and you die.

Tis better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. Alfred Tennysson

#Doctorlynn.com #Thursday Dose ~ #Coronavirus lavender my #hands and calm my #soul

Oh how the media has us all in a tizzy over this virus. Just remember an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Take caution but enjoy the day.  See if you can find a bit of pleasure in something – it’s good for the immune system to de-stress, relax and be joyful. Eat a healthy diet – have a banana or indulge in a piece of dark chocolate – good for your gut bacteria.

Today when I needed to sanitize my hands and quiet my nerves I reached into my purse and took out my lavender hand sanitizer. This one I bought @Wholefoods, (wonder if they will give me a bump for giving them a free shout out? – but whether or not they do), the lavender hand sanitizer is a wonderful product and here is why:

It comes in a spray bottle that fits in your purse. You spray it on and rub it into your hands; so there is no paper waste to throw away; like you have with wipes. But mostly it is because of its contents. Lavender is an antiseptic herb. It has been used as a purifier; that is what it does to the air – it cleans it of debris.  When you inhale lavender you get a breath of bold softness that begs you to breathe and relax – this is good for your stress and lowering your stress improves your immune functioning. Lavender is a scent that will lift the soul; if you let its real nature in – so Corona Virus – I am putting lavender on my hands, taking a deep breath and with this bringing health to my body, my mind and my soul. Have a nice day….

Namaste ~ may you go with health, happiness and peace

#Coronavirus ~ Don’t #Touch!?

With the scare of the Coronavirus many people are rushing to buy and use surgical gloves to cover their hands in hopes of not contracting the virus. This made me wonder what would happen if we lost our sense of touch? What would happen if we avoided handshakes, friendly hugs and even brushing against someone in a social setting? Would we even go so far as to not touch our loved ones unless they were sterilized?

When we think of the five senses we most likely think first about sight and sound followed by scent, taste and finally touch.  However, we can somewhat overcome losing our sense of smell, sight, taste and hearing, but if we lose our sense of touch we could not even sit up or walk. Somatonsensation, which is part of the sensory system, is also known as out tactile sense or our sense of touch. It allows us to feel texture, temperature, pressure, body position, movement, vibrations and pain which arise from the muscles, joints, skin and fascia.

The skins “sense of touch” is what gives our brains a wealth of information about the natural environment, including temperature, humidity, and air pressure. Most importantly, this sense of touch lets us feel physical pain–a necessity for avoiding injury, disease, and danger.

Physical touch is known to improve the function of your immune system, as well as reduce diseases such as those associated with the heart and blood. One study on women found that receiving more hugs from their partners led to lower heart rates and blood pressure.

Adults require human touch to thrive. It causes us to bond and alerts us to danger. A lack of physical affection or touch can actually kill babies. Babies who are not held or cuddled enough will literally stop growing and if the situation lasts long enough even if they receive proper nutrition will die.

When we touch our bodies produce a neurotransmitter called oxytocin, also known as the “cuddle hormone” or “love hormone” because it is released when people snuggle up or bond socially. It’s even being tested to combat anxiety. But new research shows that it can cause emotional pain when factors that prohibit its production, such as stress are happening around us. And wow is all the hoopla about the coronavirus stressful!

All this stress and hysteria over coronavirus is attacking the very foundation of our existence; our sense of touch. Now it’s not that we shouldn’t use some common sense and precautions, but stress is one of the leading factors for lowering the immune system and it is a strong immune system and not surgical gloves that we need to fight off any disease such as the coronavirus.

The only way to produce this important hormone (oxytocin) is through touch and bonding so if we remove our sense of touch we stop loving, caring and bonding. What would a world be like without touch? It protects us, guides us and allows us to bond; all essential to human existence.

So instead of hysteria use some common sense: wash your hands, avoid touching public surfaces such as those in public bathrooms, stay away from large crowds and don’t travel to virus infected areas. But keeping the immune system strong is the best line of defense. Eat a healthy diet which includes lots of fruits and vegetable. Your gut equates for 70% of your immune functioning. Keep your gut bacteria strong. Eat prebiotic the fertilizer that feeds your good bacteria. These foods include bananas, chocolate, oats, onions and garlic. Exercise; studies show that aerobic exercise increases oxytocin output as well as forces the bone marrow to produce white blood cells which are our army against diseases. Yoga with its twisting movements improves the immune system by twisting and moving the lymphatic system(responsible for moving the white blood cells throughout our body) and yoga reminds us to relax, de-stress and  this allows the body to rebuild and rejuvenate.

So every day I do something aerobic and something yoga by teaching my Doctor Lynn’s Yoga Dance, I eat a healthy diet that includes the one or more of the above prebiotics, I take time to relax, I take a dose of my Doctor Lynn’s Pep Berry Immune Booster and I give my husband a big hug!

See previous blog on coronavirus for more on immune functioning and be sure and visit my webpage for more information on the importance of dance, yoga, diet, Nectars and hugging; because an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure!

#Yoga Today ~ The Nidhi – the container

The Nidhi is the container of the treasures of life. The treasures belong to everyone to use as they choose.  Some will use them to prosper and others will misuse them and create hardships. Where is the Nidhi? Here the secret is revealed. The container is you. You hold all the treasure of life. You just need to know what they are, where to find them and how to use them to prosper.

.

These treasures should be used in conjunction with the four aims in life; to bring material wealth to the world, to enjoy the pleasures of life and to create harmony while consciously making an effort to accept and be at peace as you walk the soulful path.

To fully understand this we must take a step backward to our karma. Remember you can change everything about your life accept your family of origin (your biological mother and father) and your individuality. You are unique, but we all share the same emotions and feelings. Everyone experiences sadness and everyone experiences joy. You can change your name, your gender, your wealth, your attitudes and perceptions but you cannot change the basic structure of who you are so embrace yourself and be grateful for although everyone has challenges in their life each of these is here as a lesson designed to make you stronger, keep you open and flexible to change, to give you balance when the storms of life are blowing and to ultimately guide you to acceptance and peace. Let’s get started

Prosperity is not measured by the size of your bank account. It is measured by the degree of your happiness. If you are unhappy you can change that because you have the power to change everything, accept your family of origin and your individuality. If you don’t like something, or if something cause you discord; change the way you look at it and the way you look at it will change. To prosper in life you must seek to create wealth, find pleasure in the small and everyday things, live harmonious with all of life, and learn to accept and make peace. Then reach out from a place of strength, while holding your balance and you will find that you have all you need to prosper in the world.

#Coronavirus or any #compromise– How to fight it? Prevention!

First – don’t panic – stress compromises an immune system. If you are healthy and take healthy measures most likely you will avoid the flu or at worst get a mild case so…

Not just the Corona virus, but any flu, or illness can be an issue for a compromised immune system. Regarding the latest Corona virus we don’t know how it is being spread, how to contain it, and how to defeat it, so the best line of defense is a strong and healthy immune system. When the immune system is strong you have a better chance of fighting it off and if you should get sick a speedy and safe recovery.

You may not realize this, but 70% of your immune system is in your gut and the bacteria or micro bacteria in your gut are unique to you. Living inside of your gut are 300 to 500 different kinds of bacteria containing nearly 2 million genes. Like a fingerprint, each person's microbiota is unique: The mix of bacteria in your body is different from everyone else's mix. It’s determined partly by your mother’s microbiota -- the environment that you’re exposed to at birth -- and partly from your diet and lifestyle. The bacteria live throughout your body, but the ones in your gut may have the biggest impact on your well-being. They line your entire digestive system. Most live in your intestines and colon. They affect everything from your metabolism to your mood and your immune system.

The white blood cells in your body fight off infections and the flu virus. White blood cells (WBC) are called leukocytes or leucocytes and they account for only 1% of your blood but their job is big. These cells protect the body against both infectious disease and foreign evaders. All WBC are produced and derived from cells in the bone marrow called hematopoietic cells.

Leukocyte or (WBC) your infection fighting cells increase when fighting the flu and/or some other diseases. When the number of white cells in your blood is higher than normal, it’s called leukocytosis.

In most cases leukocytosis is the result of normal bone marrow reacting to inflammation or infection. This is caused by stress, overexertion, seizures, anxiety, anesthesia, and of course inflammation, flues and disease.

Think of white blood cells as your immunity cells. In a sense, they are always at war. They flow through your bloodstream to fight viruses, bacteria, and other foreign invaders that threaten your health.  WBC rise when your body is under attack from extreme physical stress caused by an injury or emotional stress as well as inflammation, labor or the end of pregnancy, smoking, or even extreme exercise.

White blood cells rush in to help destroy the harmful substance and prevent illness.

White blood cells are made in the bone marrow. They are stored in your blood and lymph tissues. Because some white blood cells have a short life of 1 to 3 days, your bone marrow is always making them. But just how does the body make white blood cells?

Lymphocytes create antibodies to fight against bacteria, viruses, and other potentially harmful invaders. WBC count is increased when we are under attack. However, a weakened immune system caused by illness or chemotherapy and radiation can destroy WBC and leave you at risk for infection. So a higher than normal WBC can mean the body is fighting an infection.

We also have a lymphatic system that helps the immune system stay strong. The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to transport lymph, a fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body. But unlike blood, the lymphatic fluid is not pumped. It is squeezed through the vessels when we use our muscles. This is why exercise and especially yoga is a healthy and natural way to improve immune functioning.

So if the lymphatic system and the WBCs are our line of defense when it comes to infections and disease how do we keep them strong and healthy? Well, just remember; an ounce of prevention is more than a pound of cure!

Diet, exercise, rest, sunshine, herbs, essential oils and de-stressing are the most natural and healthy ways to boost and protect the immune system. So here are some simple things we can all do to keep the body, mind and soul healthy and fit.

Your diet is your first line of defense. The only thing that will rebuild and rejuvenate the body is a healthy diet. Drugs (prescription, over the counter or illegal) are chemical compounds. There is nothing is drugs that supports the health of your body. Your body requires vitamins and minerals, fats, proteins and carbohydrates to keep it health and functioning. Think of it like a car. Put the right fuel in and it runs. Put the wrong fuel in and the engine dies.

Let’s begin with the microbiota in your gut. Did you know that as well as probiotics you need to get prebiotics? Think of prebiotics as fertilizer that helps the microbiota grow and probiotics as what helps the microbiota repair and renew. Prevention is always better than cure so some great prebiotic foods are bananas, cocoa, flax seed, oats, garlic and onion. Probiotics are needed when the immune system has been compromised by disease, antibiotics or other medicines. Good probiotic foods are fermented foods such as miso, yogurt, cheese, sauerkraut and pickles. Natural whole foods are the best way to get both prebiotics and probiotics as often times supplements are adulterated – not always doing what they purported to be. Just remember you are what and how you eat, so fertilize your gut with healthy bacteria!

Note when you cook food you often destroy its vitamin and mineral content. Make sure you eat raw and fresh fruits, vegetable and dark leafy greens every day. Raw foods contain and produce enzymes; the engine the body needs to digest, assimilate and eliminate food. Without enzymes we cannot break down the nutrients from our foods.

For the lymphatic system eat red foods such as berries, cherries, pomegranate, cranberries and especially beets; all of which are natural lymph moving and detoxifying agents.

Drink plenty of water, green tea and ginger tea to stay hydrated. Ginger is a natural antiviral herb.

Eat a healthy diet rich in alkaline foods and vegetables that provide a full range of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Alkaline foods include fruits and vegetable and grains, such as bananas, sweet potatoes, apples, oatmeal and berries.

Include healthy fats in your diet.Omega-3 is essential to keeping your body healthy. Eat fatty fish, walnuts and pecans.

Exercise daily, including both aerobic and anaerobic physical activity. Any type of muscular contraction helps move lymph along, but yoga, with its emphasis on working every part of us, is especially effective. ...Conscious breathing can act as a lymphatic pump helping direct lymph through the deep areas of the body.
Get a massage; not only does it help you to relax and de-stress, massage therapy improves circulation and helps the body to detox.  It increases the production of endorphins, serotonin and dopamine; neurotransmitters that improve our mood and enhance our immune system.

Get some sunshine! We evolved under natural sunlight. The best way and most direct way to get vitamin D is through direct sunlight. This should be done at noon when the sun is at its peak. Fifteen minute of direct sunlight is all it takes to get your daily does of vitamin D. So at lunch time take a fifteen minute walk in the sunlight. And don’t forget to open the windows and let in some fresh air. A breath of fresh air reduces pollutants, germs and stress!

Now we can use Lysol, Clorox or any other alcohol wipe to clean surfaces and we should wash our hands frequently as germs and viruses live on hard surfaces such as door knobs, sinks and counter tops. But there are other more natural things we can do to keep germs at bay.

Let’s start with essential oils. Essential oils are called the blood of the plant. They are full of nutrients and compounds that make them natural antibiotic, analgesics, antiseptic, antispasmodic and antiviral. There are some very complicated oils that should be used with caution.  However, an oil that is relatively safe is lavender. It is antiviral and an antiseptic so a great oil to be added to sanitary wipes; and so are lemon, tea tree, and eucalyptus, cloves and cinnamon antiviral-antiseptic oils. Cinnamon was one of the oldest spices known to humans. The ancient Greeks and Romans used it to improve circulation, as an antiseptic and as a tonic for flu and intestinal infections. All of these oils can be diffused into the air or simply put a few drops of the oil on a tissue and inhale. Do not use them directly on the skin as they can cause irritation. Sprinkle the cinnamon spice on you cereal, in your coffee or on toast for a healthy boost. Use lemon based cleaner wipes for your house and out in public.

Herbs can be eaten or you can drink them in what is known as a tincture or nectar. When the medicinal part of plant is extracted it produces an intense form of essential vitamins and minerals. As an herbal practitioner I was interested in developing a formula to boost the immune system when under stress, traveling, or feeling a little under the weather. With much trial and error I developed my Doctor Lynn’s Pep Berry Rob – immune boosting nectar in a base of honey and natural flavorings. Pay attention to your health every day; body, mind and soul, and be grateful for your health for it is truly your greatest wealth.
