Don’t Confuse the Map for the Territory

Maya – the Illusion (what does it mean?)

Maya means illusion or boundaries and can be quite confusing. It does not mean that the world is not real. The world is made up of real experiences through which we gain real knowledge into the nature of our purusa or our real being. It is not the world that is the illusion, but our interpretation of the experience.

As we move through life we become defined by our experiences. As our knowledge of life develops we are constantly trying to refine what define us.  Understanding the nature of the real purpose of life, we no longer need to live within boundaries and false perceptions of what we should be or what we think will make us happy.  Removing the maya we see the proverbial forest for the trees. We begin to realize that our experiences are like the different trees; however they make up one forest.  The details of our lives are less important than the overall picture and yet it is through the details that we have a chance to discover the lessons and the meaning of life. Don’t confuse the map for the territory!

We control how we interpret the world by the choices we make.  But when presented with a choice how do we make the right choice? Look to your purusa- your soul.

Millionaires come and go. Beauty fades. What might be important today might mean nothing tomorrow. Understanding this we realize that the maya or the illusion is in believing that life is about boundaries, bank accounts and material possessions. It is not the material world that defines us, but rather it is how we use the material world to define and refine our being.  We need the world to help us create our lives. We are here as a physical and mental being to assist the soul’s evolution and so we need the world to help us evolve. Use the world but do not be used by it.

Just remember the world is here for you to use. Nothing in it is permanent. Everything is subject to change. You cannot run away from anything or stop things from changing. That is because change is inevitable and the only constant in the universe. Be alert and aware of maya.  Remember the world is real. Your interpretation of it is the illusion. Life will present you with problems to solve and decisions to make. Learn to solve your problems and master the illusion by connecting to your purusa; your soul. Remember you are here as a body, mind and soul to do the work (karma) so that the soul evolves. Choose wisely and you will navigate the territory of life using the map of awareness, compassion and understanding. In this you will never confuse the map for the territory.
