Noble Truths

First Noble Truth – our difficulty is accepting that things change.

The second Noble Truth is that all our suffering comes from grasping or clinging to life based upon a wrong point of view. By clinging to beliefs and aspects of life that we believe to be permanent we lose sight of the fluidity of life. We confuse our perception of reality for reality. It thus creates a vicious circle where every action creates a reaction. This is known as the Law of Karma or the never-ending chain of cause and effect.

Everything in life continually changes. Accept change and learn to move with the flow of life for what might be important right now may mean nothing a moment from now.
Focus on the important part of your life - health, happiness and peace. The rest will take care of itself.

A Recipe for Sex – Carrots–More Than Meets the Eye

Orange is the color associated with the sacral chakra center which in yoga is the center of sexuality. Carrots are orange so that must make them sexy, right? Well it’s not just the color of carrots that makes them an erotic vegetable. There’s more to the carrot than meets the eye!

Carrots have long been promoted as good for your eyesight. That’s because carrots provide vitamin A and a deficiency in vitamin A has been associated with night blindness. When I was young my parents would tell me to eat my carrots because they were good for my eyes. When I looked at them inquisitively, my father would ask me if I ever saw a bunny rabbit wearing glasses. I would smile and eat my carrots.

Eating carrots for eyesight is an old wives tale, however eating carrots for sexual health is something else. Carrots are an edible root vegetables packed with nutrients. They are sweet and easily digestible both raw and cooked. They are rich in beta carotene which is what gives it the orange color. Further carrots provide a good source of vitamin C, vitamin B (Riboflavin, Niacin, Thiamin, vitamin B6 and folate), vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol) and vitamin K. They are also a rich source of minerals such as manganese and potassium. Carrots also provide iron, copper, zinc, calcium, selenium, proteins, carbohydrates and biotin. Each 100-gram of carrots contains 0.6 gram of protein, 7.6 gram of carbohydrates, 30 milligram of calcium, 0.3 gram of fat and 0.6 milligram of iron.

The Greeks and Romans believed carrots to be an aphrodisiac. So much so that the Roman emperor Caligula fed nothing but carrots to his senate so he could watch them romp like wild beast. A study out of Glasgow found that males who ate more carotenoids lived longer, were healthier and were more attractive to females.

Vitamin A is needed for the production of hormones in both men and women. In men the proper amounts of vitamin A are responsible for sperm production and virility and in females vitamin A is responsible for responsiveness and the ability to carry a fetus.

Vitamin A is responsible for our gonads (sex organs – testes and ovaries) ability to convert cholesterol into the sex hormones to be released into the blood stream and give us desire.  Without adequate vitamin A the ovaries in women and the prostate in men stop producing mucus and sex hormones.

Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin meaning it is eaten, transported and stored in fat. You must be careful when cutting fat out of your diet not to cut out the fat soluble vitamins. However, one way to make sure you get plenty of vitamin A and keep the fat and calories down is to eat carrots. Cooking and processing kills the vitamin A in most foods. Carrots however, are a good source both raw and steamed.  A little side of steamed carrots just might steam things up in the bedroom. So you see there’s more to carrots than meets the eye!

Yoga Today Liberation

The world is just a shadow from which we are completely free. This is what it means to be liberated. However, we come to this world with lessons to learn. This is the nature of karma. Lets’ suppose you gain a certain mastery over some aspect of life, but you die before you reach total liberation. You leave behind your body, but must come back again to finish the job on the pathway to enlightenment. It is only possible to attain liberation as a human being. That is because it is only through our humanness that we can acquire the consciousness necessary to attain complete liberation from desire. However, life is challenging. We will always be presented with desires and will never attain true freedom until we have burnt away the seeds of desire. This begins our study of karma yoga.

All poses in yoga require work. We must be willing to detach and let go in order to gain. The down dog is an example. It calls upon us to both surrender and at the same time be disciplined. It takes discipline to hold it and surrender to maintain it. Such as down dog; such as life.

To attain liberation we must work to remove the seeds of desire. It is not that we should not desire. It is human nature to want. It is our attachment and the value we put on these desires that must be examined. All of life is transitory. Nothing is permanent, but everything has the possibility for rebirth.

Nobel Truth

Buddhism teaches that there are four Nobel Truths that dictate the nature of our lives. The first is that frustration comes from an inability to accept that all things are transitory, meaning constantly changing. Nothing in our lives is permanent.
It is the nature of energy to be constantly changing. We are simply a field of energy body, mind and soul here on earth changing every moment of our lives. You are not the person you were a moment ago. We get into trouble when we get attached to either good energy or destructive energy and then struggle because we want stability and we forget things always change. Life is a rhyme of expansion and contraction, of up and down. When we ride this energy with detachment we find balance and balance always brings us stability.
Nothing in life is permanent. Everything is transitory.  Detach and except change. Ride with the rhythm of life and you will find stability. Stability will bring you balance and balance will bring you peace.

A Recipe for Health – Bah Bah

In America Lamb is not one of our major food choices. Once a year at Easter time my mother would make a roast lamb with mint jelly. I can’t say that I liked it. But, then I went to Morocco and had lamb tangine. The meat was soft and moist. In the Middle East and Northern Africa the meat of choice is lamb. Likewise Greece and especially the island of Crete, they eat lamb as a major source of meat.

Currently lamb is the most abundant livestock in the world. Sheep were originally domesticated in Asia and the Middle East; used both for food and for textiles. Since ancient times lamb has been regarded as a religious symbol. It is commonly used as a symbol of sacrifice most notably in the Jewish religion. Christians refer to Jesus as the “lamb of God,” with lamb often times being served as Easter dinner.

Lamb is a staple in countries throughout the world including New Zealand, Greece, the Middle East, Australia and Turkey. I have eaten lamb in every one of these countries and I can tell you that fresh lamb raised in the grassy hills is both pure and delicious.

Lamb is high in saturated fat, but it is also a great source of protein. The human body depends upon protein as a building block. We get all our essential amino acids from meat proteins.

Lamb is also a very good source of zinc. Zinc affects many of our human functions, especially our immune system. A cofactor in many enzymatic reactions, zinc is critical in immune functioning, wound healing and normal cell division. Zinc also helps stabilize blood sugar levels, the body’s metabolic rate and is necessary for optimal smell and taste functioning.

Zinc is especially important for men. Not only is it good for prostate health and sperm count, but it also plays a role in keeping bone density strong in men. A study of 396 men found a correlation between those low levels of dietary zinc, low level of minerals in the blood and low bone density. A 4 ounce serving of lamb provides about 38.3% of the daily requirement for zinc.

Lamb is also a good source of Vitamin B12 which is responsible for the production of red blood cells, preventing anemia, nerve cell development and the proper metabolizing of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

Lamb like all red meat should be limited to 1-3 servings a week of about 4 ounces each serving. In other countries meat is not eaten every day. Vegetable proteins, whole grains and fruits and vegetables make up the bulk of the diet with meat as a side dish. If you eat lamb, eat small amounts, no more than 1-2 times per week; so you derive the greatest benefits without sacrificing your health.

Liberation

Last week we studied the use of power and the importance of having the right moral and ethical background.

Lesson today is about achieving a balanced and stable mind within the context of life. Who doesn’t get pulled into drama and emotions or caught up in games, competition and fighting? How about sadness and fear? We call this being tossed around in the world. In the ideal we are in the world, but not of the world. We appear in the world, but are not perturbed or thrown off balance by events. Once this is achieved an individual is liberated. Now it is not that a person must go away and live the life of a hermit in order to achieve liberation. It means to live fully in the world while maintaining your balance. Control your mind and you control everything. Nothing is achieved without practice.

Sometimes people try to run away and hide and even renounce life to be free of life’s turmoil. But you can never run away for the nature of life is to be constantly changing and challenging.

Therefore, with all things in life fully understand their nature, handle them properly and then rise above and be at peace. In this you begin to understand yourself. You free yourself from the entanglement of worldly emotions. You have achieved the power of peace.

Spiritual Fitness – it’s a soulful thing

What does your energy reflect?

Nutrition, exercise, attitudes, motivation, time and space are all about energy. The level or depth of your energy at any given time is reflected in your outward persona. However, it is virtually impossible to make lifestyle changes without addressing your soulful energy.

I am not talking about losing weight and starting an exercise program. This is not about a formulized program, but rather a journey that involves balancing the energy of the body, the mind and the soul.

The Buddha said that once one gets onto the path of enlightenment, one cannot help but live a healthy life. Spiritual enlightenment brings with it a reverence for all of life, but especially an appreciation of the self.

It does not mean that we will not be tempted or never encounter another challenge or obstacle. It simply is a way of life where our responses to situations change. We view the world from a different perspective, and this perspective assist us in seeing things not as they appear to be, but as they really are.

A Recipe for Health, Sex, Happiness and Love

A Recipe for Health, Sex, Happiness and Love

Many foods bring back memories. Shrimp takes me back to the small fishing village, where I grew up. In the winter the fishermen would catch fresh shrimp. Fresh and cold from the icy winter waters of Maine we would shell them, cook them and eat them not as a luxury, but as an everyday staple.

Tonight’s dinner – Mango Shrimp

The meal begins with a simple salad made of love by a Pink Lady apple. Arrange fresh endives on a chilled plate. Slice one Pink Lady apple into quarters. Slice the quarters into slivers and arrange on top of the endives. Cut into small chunks manchego – a Spanish cheese that works well with the apples. You can also use a Romano cheese. Any cheese will work, but keep it on the mild side. Sprinkle the top with slivered almonds.

Mix the juice of one small orange into a small measuring cup. Add about 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Stir and then pour over the top of the salad just before serving.

Mango Shrimp:

1 ripe mango peeled

2 tablespoons of lemon juice

1 pound of large shrimp peeled

1 tablespoon of chicken stock

1 teaspoon of chili powder

¼ teaspoon of hot sauce

1 ½ cups of fresh cut and crushed pineapple

1 cup of chopped tomatoes

1 small red onion chopped

Puree mango with lemon juice in blender. In nonstick frying pan combine shrimp with stock, chili pepper, and hot sauce, and cook, stirring about three minutes. Mix in pineapple, tomatoes, onions. Cook for about 1 minute. Spoon onto plate and drizzle mango sauce on top.

Serves 4 at about 207 calories a serving – serve with cooked rice or couscous. For wine try a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, It is an excellent white wine that goes well with seafood.

Yoga Today - Power

Power – we all have power. We have the power to persuade, to direct and to teach. In all our relationships we have the power to do well and act unselfishly. But if power is attained without the right moral and ethical background power can turn from creation to destruction.

According to yoga, originally the world was un-manifested pure consciousness. When it began to manifest the ego was born, then the individual and then the mind. From the mind arrives the gross physical world. As we think so your world is created and destroyed .This is the nature of creation and destruction.

What we see outside of our selves is the manifestation of the world. The nature of life is to evolve and dissolve.  Everything rises and everything falls. Now knowing that you can create your own reality is a very powerful thought. What you do with this reality depends upon your moral and ethical understanding. So remember as you think your life becomes. With your intentions – do no harm. In this you will evolve and your power will always be used for good.

A Recipe for Love – The Lady in Pink

Pink lady apples are a branded and licensed name for an apple that comes out of Australia. It was named after a grower by the name of Cripps who crossed a Lady William apple and a Golden delicious apple to combine the best feature of both apples. The apple is crisp and sweet. Pink Lady apples must meet strict specifications in terms of sugar content, firmness, color and environmentally friendly production methods.

A symbol of love, Pink Ladies have been marketed for their distinct color of soft pink with a soft green background making it the symbol of glamour and femininity. Pink ladies receive special advertising during Valentine’s Day.

Pink Ladies grow in both the northern and southern hemisphere making them available all year round. Crisp and sweet, they have a unique flavor that has become a favorite in Europe, as well as, the United States. Only about 10 years old they have gained worldwide recognition.

Because it is a symbol of love, along with marking valentine’s day, it is also promoted as a warm and inviting treat as winter approaches and a light and delicate snack in the midst of summer. Pink Ladies can be eaten as a fruit, added to salads or cooked into a dessert.

Apples have long been a symbol of love. At her wedding to Zeus, Gaia supplied apples to Hera signifying long love and union. Dionysus, the Greek God of Wine, offered apples to woo Aphrodite and win her love. In many cultures the apple has played a role in determining and establishing love.

We’ve all heard that an apple a day will keep the doctor away. That’s because apples are a good source of vitamin C, which aid the immune system and a good source of phenols which reduce cholesterol. Although not a great source of fiber, it is also believed that apples help to reduce tooth decay and kill bacteria. Cornell University researchers suggest that the quercetin found in apples protects brain cells against Alzheimer’s disease.

It’s important to note that most of the health benefits of apples in found in the skin so it is important to eat the whole apple including the skin. Although not the most exotic of fruits apples are widely loved by most people.

Our pink lady with her soft pink color and shaded green background is the color of the heart chakra.  This symbol of the heart makes the Pink Lady romantic, passionate and light hearted; she is therefore, a symbol of love.

The Power of Concentration

Today we are going to study something a little esoteric; concentration. The power of concentration is a mighty force. When we learn to harness this energy we begin to understand the inner workings of the power to create.

In other words, with complete concentration we can overcome obstacles and create whatever we desire. Nothing is impossible in the realm of the spirit. But we must be cautionary with power. A good example would be the use of atomic power as a means of destruction rather than as a means of healing and creation. Here is where ethics and morals come into play. We all know what it is like to have a certain amount of power. But the caution is that with power there must be the right morale background or power will turn into a mode of destruction.  In yoga we are taught to always do the greatest good for the greatest many and do no harm. So with whatever power you achieve in life use it for good.  To understand this will take some reflection on the energy of your body your mind and or soul.

Let’s get started.

Always do the greatest good for the greatest many. Do no harm.

A Recipe for Happiness – Shrimply Devine

Shrimp are a crustacean, but unlike their close cousins the lobster and the crab they do not crawl, they swim. They use the swimmerets on their abdomen to swim forward and their tails to swim backwards. Shrimp are a wonderful alternative to meat proteins, both low in calories and saturated fat.

Although small in stature, shrimp are anything but small when it comes to nutrition. 4 ounces of shrimp at only 112 calories are a great source of tryptophan, protein, selenium, vitamin B12, omega 3 fatty acid, vitamin D, iron, vitamin B3, zinc, copper and magnesium.

Many people are confused about the fat and cholesterol content of shrimp. Shrimp are very low in fat but somewhat high in cholesterol. However, studies have shown that a diet of shrimp raised LDL (bad cholesterol) by 7 % and HDL (good cholesterol) by 12%. An egg diet raised LDL by 10% and HDL by 7 %. Further shrimp lowered triglycerides (a form in which fat is carried to the blood) by 13%. It appears that the good outweighs the bad.

But can these little crustacean really make us happy? Well, they taste good, they’re low in fat, low in calories and can be added to a variety of dishes. That should make us happy. But little as they are, they are so much more.

Nutritional Science tells us that certain things in the diet can be good for treating mild forms of depression. Vitamin D, vitamin B12, B3 (niacin), omega3 fish oils, zinc and magnesium are all good for supporting mental health and lifting mild forms of depression.

What do we find in shrimp? We get; vitamin D, vitamin B12, vitamin B3, zinc, omega3 fish oils, zinc and magnesium. Ounce for ounce this makes shrimp a pretty good anti-depressant food. Further our bodies require a certain amount of fat to function well. We call these fats essential fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acid such as that found in shrimp cannot be manufactured by the body. We must get it from our diet. Essential fatty acids protect our cells against invading toxins, bacteria, viruses and allergens, as well as support a healthy cardiovascular system.

Shrimp taste good, are low in fat and calories. They support both a healthy body and a healthy mind. So with shrimp we get good taste, low calories and a high nutrient food that can be prepared in a number of different ways, making shrimp something to smile about! Be happy…eat shrimp.

Yoga Today- Detachment

Detachment – this is one of the hardest things to understand. We all want comfort. We all want love and joy. In yoga detachment does not mean giving up these things. It means quieting the mind so that we are not disturbed by our cravings for these things. It means we remain at peace with our life just as it is while reaching outward into the world and living a full life. Things will come and things will go. Being at peace within ourselves is the greatest gift of life. We don’t need to give up anything. But to truly enjoy the world we need to learn to keep our heart open with compassion and understanding and let our hands do our work or our karma. So detach from needs, wants and desires, stay present and enjoy every aspect of the world for in everything there is something to learn and this learning will bring you knowledge and knowledge will bring you wisdom. In this you will live a life free of attachments. This will bring you joy. If you do this you will never fail. That is the secret to living a successful life.

In yoga there is a saying that means keep your mind at peace and let your hands do your work. If you know how to be at peace while you go about your daily life you will always find joy. Open your soul and work to bring to your life happiness, health and peace. What more could you want?

Namaste

Yoga Today – Self Mastery

To achieve anything you must practice patience, devotion and faith. The one who learns to master self (control the mind) is the one who learns how to detach and let go. This does not mean indifference. Every desire causes the mind to wander. When the mind is chasing desires it is not at peace. With a restless mind it is impossible to maintain your focus and to practice with patience, devotion and faith.

To be unattached means to be without personal desires. This is where it gets tricky because to remove personal desires means to remove expectations. If you remove expectation you remove disappointment. Then you are truly free. You may think that if I denounce everything I will not have any joy in my life. This is not so. If you seek to serve others unselfishly you will receive eternal joy. Your just rewards will come. You can never be happy by chasing after money and things. But to give unselfishly with no expectations is to be grounded within yourself and when you are grounded and happy within yourself, you will find peace.

Everything  in life gives. Sacrifice is the law of life. A tree gives fruit. A cow gives milk and a candle burns to give you light. Now you may ask, “How am I to live if I serve others?” You must have a roof over your head and food to eat. You must live and exist in the world. All of these things will come into your life with a sense of joy when your motive is to serve others. The corporation who seek to serve others by providing good jobs, good pay, good products and good benefits is a happier place than the corporation that seek to suppress and take advantage of others. Family and friends who support each other without the desire for personal gains are much happier than the family who selfishly fights to control each other.

When I teach a yoga class and at the end someone comes up to me and tells me what I said made a difference in their life, I am filled with joy. There is no value you can put on those moments. To give with no expectations always returns to you the greatest joy.   So give of yourself unselfishly with patience, devotion and faith. In this you will achieve. Nothing is achieved without practice.

Detach and let go of desires. Do not let your desires bind you. Go out into the world unselfishly with a peaceful mind and serve others. In this you will find happiness and peace.

Opening the Heart Chakra- the power of love- because we all need love.

The heart is the cross over point between the physical and the metaphysical world. Its color is green which symbolizes independence, peace and rejuvenation. The heart is the center of love, but not the love we think we know. It is the love of compassion and understanding and that is the true nature of love. When closed we become hardhearted, overwhelmed and afraid. When open we reach out into the world and give without looking for a return. If you want to open up to the metaphysical world it begins with balancing and opening the heart. This takes the movement of energy. It begins with loving you and that can only be found through a sense of personal power and a belief in the inherent good that is found in all of life. You are the love you give and receive. So let’s do some yoga and then let’s dance to the cosmic energy of the universe, drawing to ourselves the power of love.

Remember you are the love you give and receive. Love is the container for everything. Step outside of love and you will discover a void. Step back in and you will discover that to truly love is to have compassion and understanding. Give and receive from a place of love.

A Recipe for Sex – it takes two to Mango

Mangos, known as the “king of fruit” rightfully comes by this name as it is rich in amino acids, vitamin C, vitamin E, flavonoids, beta carotene, niacin, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium.

About 4000 BC , the wild mango originated in the foothills of the Himalayas of India and Burma, and about 40 to 60% of these trees still grow in India and Southeast Asia.  Though native to Southern and Southeast Asia, the fruit is now also grown in Central and South America, Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Today there are over 1,000 different varieties of mangos throughout the world.

Now aside from all the other great health benefits, mangos are good for your sex life. Rich in vitamin E and niacin (B-3), these two erotic vitamins enhance our sexual health. Vitamin E can be used as a safe natural lubricant. In an animal study it was found that depriving males of vitamin E rich foods caused the testicles to shrink and for females cause the fetus to shrink back into the female tissues of the uterus. Scientist believe that vitamin E is essential for fertility.

Niacin is responsible for that warm flush we feel in the throes of sexuality. It is also important in the manufacture of the sex and adrenal hormones. The ability of a male to reach orgasm is dependent upon the release of histamine. When animals that we unable to reach an orgasm were given niacin they were able to copulate.

Niacin is also responsible for bringing blood to the skin’s surface making it more sensitive to touch and is believed to heighten the sexual experience. It also causes an increase in mucus to the mouth and genital area.

A pretty face and soft skin go a long ways towards enticing a lover. Mangos are high in Vitamin A which is the vitamin the skin needs to stay healthy and glowing. For acne you can cut up a fresh mango and place the flesh on the skin. It is soothing and healing. To make your skin soft and oh so touchable try this simple body scrub:

1 ripe mango peeled
1/2 cup sugar
1TBS honey
2 TBS whole milk

Blend mango, sugar, honey, and milk in a blender until it is smooth. Stand in the shower while rubbing this treatment all over vigorously. Rinse with warm water and finish with cool water.

More mangos are eaten daily than any other fruit in the world. Soft skin, healthy eyes and a sensitive touch just might set the mood, making the mango a sexy fruit!

Yoga Today Continual Practice

Control your thoughts and then learn to detach and let go. Everything in life brings us both pleasure and pain. Remember pleasure can turn to pain and pain can turn to pleasure. We hold onto pleasure and then fear losing it. This turns to pain. To find balance we must learn to detach from both and simply observe without judgment. But this is not easy. We need to practice not for a minute, an hour or even a day, but continuously.  However, it is not enough to just practice. We must do it with full attention of our mind and total faith in our ability to achieve. It requires three qualities; patience, devotion and faith.

If I give you a mantra to practice and tell you it will bring peace to your life and that you must practice it faithfully to see results, you will ask me how long will it take?  My answer; until you master it. A mantra means to have a continual thought. Think about maintaining a continual thought. What if it was anger and frustration? What would your life be like? What if it was peace and serenity?  You have the power to choose. You can control your thoughts, but you must continually practice. Nothing comes in an instant, a moment, a year and sometime even a life time. For example one of my favorite mantras is Om Shanti, shanti, shanti. It simply means “May the cosmic energy of life bring me laughter, love and to all my being body, mind and soul bring me tranquility, serenity, harmony and peace. Imagine if this became a continual thought in your mind?  What would your life be like? To achieve this or to achieve anything in life, takes patience, devotion and faith.

Nothing is achieved without practice. This is why we are here.

To achieve anything in life takes patience, devotion and faith.

Om Shanti, shanti, shanti. May the cosmic energy of life bring me laugher, love and to all of my being body, mind and soul bring me tranquility, serenity, harmony and peace.

Namaste – my you go with health, happiness and peace.

A Recipe for Health – Pine-apple A Day

How you digest your food is as important if not more important than what you eat. It takes enzymes to digest and extract important nutrients from the food we ingest. Enzymes, made up of proteins play an essential part in all bodily activity. Enzymes are what help us to digest our food. In fact life could not exist without enzyme.

The body manufactures a supply of enzyme and we also get them from the foods we eat. Unfortunately they get destroyed through cooking and processing. This is one of the reasons why it is good to eat whole, raw foods. This will assist the  body in the manufacturing  enzymes, and raw foods and their enzymes will also inhibit the release of enzyme the body uses to digest cooked foods, enabling the body’s enzymes to work at a higher and more efficient capacity.

There are three types of enzymes the body uses to digest food; amylase for carbohydrates, protease for proteins and lipase for fat. Plant enzymes differ from animals enzymes.

Pineapple, unripe papaya and aspergillus plant are excellent sources of plant enzymes. These foods contain the enzymes papain and bromelin which work to break down proteins. Health benefits from these enzymes have been shown to assist the body with; inflammation, sports injuries, respiratory disease, viral diseases and cancer.

In addition to being a great digestive aid pineapples are high in Vitamin C (an antioxidant), manganese and B1 which are necessary for energy production. Pineapple has also been shown to be good for eye health and the prevention of macular degeneration.

The pineapple which is native to Central and South America, as well as parts of Asia was first discovered and brought to Europe by Christopher Columbus. It soon became a delightful sweet, nicknamed the “pine cone of the Indians”, it was a favorite of European royalty. In America it was customary to place a pineapple on the tale when folks came to visit. It was a symbol of welcoming and sharing, as in colonial days the only form of exchange was through visits and friendly chats. To this day the pineapple represents a sign of welcome and good health.

Today when we think of pineapples we think of Hawaii. Pineapples were first cultivated and processed in Hawaii by Mr. Dole; hence canned Dole Pineapples. Although canned pineapples have some nutritional benefits it is the fresh pineapple that gives us the enzymatic assistance and the greatest degree of antioxidants.

Packed with vitamins and mineral and at only about 52 calories per 100gm; far and away that makes pineapple a great recipe for health.

Control your mind you control everything

First we need to practice and second we need to learn to detach and let go. This may seem a contradiction, but if you think about it control is the ability to detach and let go of the emotions that get us into trouble. This is not easy. It is something we must continue to practice not just for the time we spend in yoga class, but beyond class and into our everyday lives. It means to be eternally aware and watchful of your thoughts as they arise. We use the yoga poses, such as down dog, to teach us how to discipline our bodies as we move into the pose. But to maintain it we need to breathe and let go, detach and surrender. These two opposing forces work together to create balance. What we are seeking is the balance between matter and spirit

Seek balance in all things and in all things seek balance. This is best understood as moderation.

Love

The fourth chakra, which is the heart chakra, is of course connected to the heart. It is the cross over point between the physical world and the metaphysical world. It is in a constant tug of war between thoughts coming in and thoughts going out. It is a place of judgment. To transcend is to transcend mind and connect with the divine love of the universe. When in balance, we are able to give and receive love. When out of balance, we lose the ability to give and receive. We lose the ability to love our selves, and can become hard hearted or wildly infatuated. With lack of love for self, we cut our self-off from others. Our relationships suffer. The heart chakra opens us up to connecting with the higher consciousness of the upper three chakras. Authentic love blooms from here.

A Recipe of health, sex, happiness and love

The Italians have a special kind of romance. To me it is very rustic and passionate; a mood unto its own. I love the food, the singer Bocelli and the Amalfie coast where my husband asked me to marry him.

So tonight we go simple Italian.

Start with a simple salad of mixed herbs and greens topped with slices of fresh avocado and a sprinkling of goat cheeses. On the side added crusty bread or a cracker I found in Whole foods market called Two Moms in the Raw – gluten free, oil free and sugar free raw cracker made from flax seed and other ingredients. Light and crispy it goes well with a light salad and goat cheese.

Chill and serve a Sauvignon Blanc with the meal

Angel Hair Pasta with fresh tomatoes and basil

Ingredients:

Angel Hair Pasta 4 ounces for two servings– I’m using De Boles Organic whole wheat angle Hair

1 tsp minced garlic

2 roma tomatoes chopped into small bite size pieces

¼ cup fresh chopped basil leaves

1 tablespoon of olive oil

½ cup of freshly shredded parmesan cheese

Cook pasta according to package directions, drain and then set aside and keep warm.

In a medium size pan coated with a little olive oil sauté garlic until tender. Toss in tomatoes and basil and cook for about 2 minutes. Toss together pasta and tomato mixture. Place on separate serving plates and sprinkle the top of each serving with the parmesan cheese.

Dessert:  Raspberry sauce over vanilla gelato

Purchase vanilla gelato.

Raspberry sauce

1 cup fresh raspberries

1 tablespoon of sugar

1 tablespoon of orange juice

Combine in a blender and puree

Serve over the top of gelato.

Light and easy this meal can be prepared in no time. You’ll discover the substance of happiness mixed with sexuality and topped with health and then finish it all with a saucy splash of love.

Vrittis – our thoughts

Control the mind and you control everything. This is easier said than done. With practice and non-attachment we can learn to control our thoughts. When we control our thoughts we control our words and our deeds. To practice detachment we must be aware of the thoughts as they arise. Examine your thoughts carefully and then take deep breath, release the breath and let go of that which does not serve you and hold onto that which brings you peace.

Nothing is achieved without practice.

Continue to practice. It does not come in a day or a year. Scrutinize your thoughts, your words and your actions. Hold onto that which serves to bring you peace and let go of that which no longer serves you. How do you know it no longer serves you? If it disturbs your peace you no longer need it.

The Vrttis - Our Consciouness

The vrttis make impressions upon our minds. These vrttis are ways in which we understand consciousness. Consciousness is a series of impressions. What we do with these impressions is up to us. Impressions come from correct knowledge, incorrect, imagination or delusion, sleep and dreams and from our memory.

These five thought forms must be controlled if we are to quiet the mind so that we can experience inner peace. We cannot completely empty the mind. Emptying the mind is a thought process within itself. So we seek to quiet the mind. But how can we control these vrttis? It is easy to say control the mind, but in reality the mind seems to be controlling us!

Nothing is achieved without practice. That is why we are here today – to practice yoga and attempt to control the mind, by finding balance, being flexible, maintaining our strength and discovering peace.

If you have attempted to control your mind, you have successfully practiced yoga today. It is not so much about controlling your mind, as it is about consciously being aware of the thoughts in your mind and then attempting to quiet them so you can find a moment of peace. Nothing is achieved without practice.
