A Recipe for Health -- Is Champagne good for your health?

Yes, it is and you thought it was only red wine!  Raise a glass or may-be two to your health.  Studies show that those who drink a glass or may-be two of wine a day live longer, are healthier, have better cognition, improved sex life and are generally over all happier than those who either don’t drink or drink too much. There are many reasons for this conclusion.

Wine specifically helps you to relax. It is especially good when dining. It improves circulation and improved circulation brings fresh blood and nutrients to the organs of our body.  This improves our cognition and nourishes the body with good health.

Wine is high in antioxidants and phenols which are good for our health. They help the body to fight off free radicals. Free radicals bombard our being every day. These include pollution, poor diet, aging and stress.

Wine and more specifically all alcohol may just in fact help to kill bacteria from food that could make us sick. After all alcohol is an antiseptic and as a drinkable substance it may in fact be true that a drink of wine with a meal keeps the gut free of bad bacteria. In Biblical times wine was drank instead of water because water was not sanitary and because both wine and beer provided nutritional sustenance.

Champagne has also been shown to be good for your health or more specifically good for the mind. Champagne according to a study in The Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry is packed full of those wonderful polyphenols, chemical substances derived from plants that are antioxidants which help cells avoid destruction from free radicals. The study showed that a group of neuron cells penetrated with champagne extracts demonstrated significant protection against damage to the brain.

The reason for this they concluded was that the caffeic acid and tyrosol antioxidants in champagne contain anti-inflammatory characteristics. This keeps the cells protected against damage. Furthermore, caffeic acid and tyrosol also have the ability to remove toxic chemicals from the body. So although we think of champagne as a celebratory drink it actually may truly be a toast to your health.

My $300.00 bottle of champagne (given as a gift) Dom Pe’rignon 1996 may well have been worth the price. But is a $300.00 bottle better for brain health than a $50.00 bottle, or are they virtually the same? Does it count if you open a bottle….and well you know….once you open the bottle it needs to be finished?  I think not. Just remember a glass or two to your health and beyond that you’ve had too much to drink. But it is so much fun to drink champagne!

When I think of champagne I remember back to a couple of weddings I attended where the primary drink was champagne. Those were very jovial celebrations.  Can you remember your champagne celebrations? Most likely they were some of the times we remember the most; weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, engagements and so on. So bring them on; Dom Pe’rignons, The Venue Clicquots and the Louie Roederers with all their healthful antioxidants and joyous bliss for it is always a time to celebrate when we drink to our health.

In The End What is the Sum Total?

Nothing in life comes without give and take, and sacrifice. All of life moves in a transition from birth to death. In between we give and we receive both pleasure and pain.  How we experience these things and how we use them in our life determines the karma we are either taking on or extinguishing in this life and all the lives to come.  Life has a perfect accounting system. Nothing goes unnoticed and everything gets balanced. The dramas and striving of life, with all its ups and downs, always brings us back to the status quo; where are you now? Who are you being and what is this all about?  The irony of life is that for all our outward striving and drama in the end the sum total always add up to zero. We take none of them with us when we depart this world. What we do take is the karma of our experiences. How we use these experiences defines our next reincarnate. If life hands you a difficult problem and you face it with compassion and understanding you create harmony and not discord. It is not the problem you take with you when you depart this world, but the virtue of compassion and this will assist you in this life and all the others lives to come.

To overcome the obstacles in life you need to learn how to Soul Walk. It is not a religious path, but it is a path of faith. It is about walking consciously with constant devotion towards making you a better person and the world a better place. It is about never forgetting the importance of health; body, mind and soul. It is an understanding that the path may take a few zigs and zags and a few divergences along the way. Just remember from here to there is never a straight line. You may lose your way, but if you come back to the source, your soul, clarity will be your guide and you will know who you are and exactly where you are going. Keep walking the path and in this you will be wise. Because in the end the sum total always equals zero.  You take none of this with you when you depart this world except the karma you have created.

Life’s Biggest Questions

Just remember that life becomes what life does. You are here to work your karma and part of working your karma is to ponder the questions of life; who am I, why am I here and where am I going?

At some point in everyone’s life the questions of meaning will surface. In fact striving to answers these is the most powerful driving force that will cause humans to question. These questions ponder the design of things, and the purpose and meaning of our lives. Who am I and what happens when earth life ends? We all wrestle with these questions at various times in our lives, no matter what our station, preference, color, gender or creed.

Just remember you are a soul who has taken on this body and this mind to work out your karma.  Work your karma and you will prosper.  Let’s begin by moving our bodies, quieting our mind and focus on tapping into our souls.

Answering the questions of life will require work. Nothing comes instantaneously and without a lot of effort and sometimes turmoil. The Chinese have a symbol for crisis that means both danger and opportunity. How you envision things and how hard you are willing to work determines whether what comes your way is either a crisis of danger or a crisis of opportunity. Stay focused, maintain your balance and you will see life not as a crisis of danger, but as an opportunity to work your karma and in this you will prosper.

Karma – life becomes what life does

What is karma? Sometimes it is best to define something by what it is not. Karma is not about good or bad. That would means judgement. We are not here on earth to judge. We are here to observe. Karma is about cause and effect. Every action creates a reaction so it behooves us to pay careful attention to everything we think, say and do. Karma means work. When we think of work we think of our professions, but that is not the nature of karma. Karma is about working to develop virtues and removes vices and this can only be done when you take on an earthly life.

You are here to work on purifying your being and to do this you must take on and live out all aspects of your life; pleasure and pain. What you do for a living gives you an opportunity to work on your karma, but karmic work is of a soulful nature and not for mental satisfaction and physical comfort.

Part of working on your karma is to work on establishing balance, being flexible and finding your strength. Let’s get stated.

Just remember that life becomes what life does. Every thought, word and action creates a reaction so pay careful attention to what you think, say and do. Karma means work. You are here on earth to do your karmic work. Do it with conscious thought and you will reap the rewards.

Beginning Anew

Beginner’s mind means to continually come back to the present moment with a sense of wonder and awe as the mysteries of life unfold. Every moment presents us with an opportunity and yet most of us pass by the moments in hopes of catching some future prize. We want more and when we want more we are never satisfied. This dilutes our focus. Each moment determines the outcome of the next moment and all the future moments to come. Realize this and each moment becomes an opportunity to begin something new. Here and now we understand that our real power is not in brute force, but in being able to use the present to create a better future.

Power is being able to withstand all sorts of events and situations without losing your flexibility, balance and inner strength. With this power comes the ability to feel confident knowing that we may not be able to control the situations that come into our lives, but we can control our perceptions and attitudes and this empowers us. When you begin to observe life from a beginner’s point of view everything is simply an opportunity to begin again with a fresh perspective.

Throughout this coming year no matter what your goals or resolutions there will be challenges. Meet these challenges with a beginners mind. Come back to each moment with a sense openness and eagerness by staying focused and enthusiastic about your goals even when confronted with disappointment and discomfort. Now you are empowered!

Namaste ~ may all your days be filled with health, happiness and peace

Why We Give Gifts at Christmas and Free Gifts to Give

The origin of giving gifts at Christmas is rooted in the birth of Christ.  In the context of the time Mary was to give birth to a king. So it would only be expected that the three wise men would bring gifts befitting a king. Gold, frankincense and myrrh, in ancient times were highly prized commodities.

Myrrh being commonly used as an anointing oil, frankincense as a perfume, and gold as a valuable metal made the giving of these three gifts a spiritual meaning of; gold as a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense  as a symbol of deity, and myrrh as a symbol of death.

Somehow through the commercialization of Christmas we have lost the real meaning of giving. It is not about how much money you spend or how the big the gift. It is about giving for the sake of giving; sacrificing for the sake of sacrifice. The real reason we give gifts at Christmas is to remind us that birth and death are two ends of the life spectrum. What we give in-between is a mark of the value we place on life.

Here are some free gifts worth giving. These won’t cost you a cent, but they will bring joy and good will.

To your enemy give forgiveness, to an opponent give tolerance, to a friend give a helping hand, to those you love give an open heart, to a customer give good service, be charitable and give your time, to every child give a good example of what it means to give unselfishly and  to yourself give respect.

These are gifts that come from the heart. Think what would happen if we gave these gifts, not just at Christmas, but all year round? We would then experience the true meaning of Christmas, which is to make the world a better place for all of humankind and in this we all thrive.

To Be Strong – Yoga Today

The basic nature of energy is the potential to create or destroy. It is void of judgment and so can move in any direction. However, how we harness this energy and use it determines the outcome. We can choose stability and balance over anguish, fear and pain.

When we learn to direct energy we become the masters of our lives. No matter how chaotic life may be we come back to the present moment and it is here that we find our grounding and our strength.

However, it is important to remember that this process is work and will not come without a lot of conscious effort. The paradox is that although the process takes tremendous strength and endurance coming back to the present moment brings us to a place of stillness and serenity.

Let’s begin to work on our balance, flexibility, strength and ability to be present here and now as we discover moment of stillness, quietude and serenity.

Along the pathway of life there will be many temptations. The greatest temptation of all will be to let yourself be guided by your ego. It is the ego that finds it hard to forgive and believes it can justify anything including violence. The basic nature of life is potential energy with the ability to create or destroy. Harness and master this energy and you will become the master of your destiny. Choose always the highest potential of your being; be gentle and, kind and in this you will always be grounded and strong.

Namaste ~ may you go with health, happiness and peace

Chaos on the Soulful Path

Always from chaos comes the opportunity for growth and higher states of being. The chaos of life will always be whirling around us. It will challenge our sense of balance, our strength and our peace of mind. We must decide to either walk our soulful path or let the chaos of life sweep us into frenzy. Just realize that you always have the power to choose.

The basic nature of cosmic energy is chaos with the potential to create or destroy. It is void of judgement and so can move in either direction.   Choose stability and balance over anguish, fear and pain.

Discovering and harnessing the energy of consciousness awareness we are empowered to continually create anew.  No matter how chaotic life may be we can come back to the present moment and here we have the power to establish our balance and strength.

However, it is important to remember that this process is work and will not come without a lot of effort. The paradox is that although the process takes tremendous strength and endurance, when living it we find peace and tranquility.

Along the pathway of life there will be many temptations. The greatest temptation of all will be that of the ego. It is the ego that thinks it can justify anything and everything; even violence.  Releasing the ego (diversity) and embracing the cosmos (unity) is soul walking.

Try to let go of negative feelings. Try not to feel anything accept using the strength of your body and the strength of your mind to connect with the consciousness of your soul. That is where your virtues lie and your vices can be extinguished.

Our Soul Purpose

Moods change from day to day, hour to hour and moment to moment. Science tells us that diet, environment, chemicals, lifestyle, etc. affect our moods. This is called biochemistry. Biochemistry is about the chemical substances (hormones, peptides, and neurotransmitters) that dictate our moods and affect our bodies. And although moods affect certain types of individuals to a greater degree than others, all moods affect everyone. The major negative mood states that affect us are:

1.      Depression

2.      Fear

3.      Worry – mental turmoil

4.      Stress

5.      Indecision

6.      Boredom or indifference

7.      Doubt – discouragement

8.      Impatience

9.      Self-distrust

10.  Weakness or powerlessness – despair

11.  Over-enthusiasm

12.  Pride or aloofness

There are many variations of these mood states, but these are perhaps the most prominent. These moods compromise the integrity of the body-mind and thus cut us off from our soul. However, awareness of the energy of the moods and implementing conscious change presents the opportunity to know the nature of our karma. Only through conscious awareness of the separation of self ( ego form soul) can we set about to make these changes.

This requires balance, strength, flexibility and tranquility. Let’s get started.

When we begin to replace the vices with the virtues we begin to change our karma.  Through the content of our lives, we have the opportunity to discover both the correction and the qualities that ultimately allow us to experience heaven on earth; better known as happiness. Developing virtues is the soul purpose of our existence here on earth. Therefore practice compassion, patience, courage, integrity, honor, strength, steadfastness, love, discipline, peace, creativity and devotion, and in this you will discover the joy of wisdom.

The Vices vs Virtues – Conquering the Troublesome Four

The troublesome four, envy, jealousy, greed and resentment are at the head of human vices. To conquer these requires a look at human virtues or the reason we are here on earth; to rid ourselves of vices and to gain virtues.

The opposite side of vices is virtues. Virtues are steps towards happiness. True happiness is the result of following the footsteps of the soul. Happiness is our ultimate birthright, bringing with it all the qualities we strive to attain during our life on earth.. The virtues we are here to obtain are compassion, patience, courage, integrity, honor, strength, steadfastness, love, discipline, devotion, creativity, peace and wisdom.

If the health of our body is controlled by the state of our mind and our mind is the storehouse of our moods and emotions, then it would make sense to address our state of mind to ensure physical health. Negative thoughts, moods and feelings cut us off from our soul. At the soulful level of our energy, pure intellect reigns. This means that at the soulful level one is not disturbed by any emotion, thought or mood and simply looks upon the earthly self as an extension with the free will to act or react. It is the ego that creates envy, jealousy, greed and resentment. So our job is to tame the ego and elevate the soul. This requires balance, strength, flexibility and peace body, mind and soul. Let’s get started.

Your ego is your earthly persona. Your job is to tame it not to extinguish it. The ego is a mighty force and necessary for preservation. It gives us our identity and allows us to succeed in a competitive world. The problem arise when the ego consciousness supersedes the soulful path. We do not need to extinguish our importance in the world. We are all important parts of the whole. We just need to remove the vices and replace them with virtues. When we do this we tame the ego and begin to live from the seat of our soul and this is a power far greater than the mightiest ego.

Review The Troublesome Four

The troublesome four affect all of us to some degree and at various times in our lives. They appear somewhat like chess pieces challenging us to check mate and remove them from the game of life. First we must consciously become aware of them and then we must experience them so we can master them. They are envy, jealousy, greed and resentment.    Be on the lookout for this troublesome four. It will require discipline, strength, balance and flexibility if you are to master them.

We practice yoga to improve, in our body, balance, flexibility and strength. But yoga is also about building strength, flexibility and balance in the mind. The body and mind together in a state of balance supports the mission of the soul. It takes strength of character to combat the troublesome four. We need flexibility to detach, adjust and let them go, and we need balance to remain calm when they appear; and appear they will!

Each time you override them with positive thoughts you diminish their power. If you resent what someone has done to you it is your perception of the situation that holds onto the resentment. If you envy someone it is your perception of their life. Most likely your perception is not accurate. Everyone has something they must battle with in life.

The reality is that what comes into your life always brings with it a lesson that if learned leads to self-mastery. The events and situation in your life are challenges that the soul has taken on for its evolution. It is the ego and the sensations of the body that get in the way. So as we work through the class today let’s focus  not only on balancing, strengthening and flexing the body, but also on calming the mind, adjusting your focus, and strengthening your inner voice.

Once you know who you are (the infinite capacity to be) and why you are here (to discover this infinite capacity) envy, jealousy, greed and competition become irrelevant.  To master the troublesome four, be content, trustworthy, generous and objective, and remember the world is real. It is your perception (how you see things) that is the illusion. Remove the maya (illusion), detach and become objective and you will see the world and all its events and situations in your life as opportunities to learn, know and master your life. Check Mate.

The Troublesome Four

A part of our purpose or being here on earth is to learn how to remove envy, jealousy, greed and resentment. To remove envy be content. To remove jealousy be trustworthy. To remove greed be generous. The fourth of the troublesome four is resentment.

Resentment is a negative state where the individual blames everybody and everything, but self for the state of his or her life. This individual feels he or she is the hapless victim of a cruel fate. Life is seen as unfair and full of disappointments. As a victim the individual refuses to accept responsibility for his or her own destiny and firmly continues to point to the outside world as the problem. Clearly, resentment blocks one off from the guidance of the soul. Success then is falsely measured not by inner experience, but by outward appearances. In a positive state a person realizes that they are the architects of their own destiny and that the human mind, and thus the soul have unlimited possibilities. Realizing that limitations are self- imposed an individual is able to lift the veil of illusion (maya) and master one’s own fate.  It is not the world that is the illusion, but your perceptron of it. You now can see the forest for the trees. Like all the troublesome four to master resentment requires balance, strength and flexibility, as well as the ability to be content and at peace with your life just as it is. Let’s work on this today.

Once you know who you are (the infinite capacity to be) and why you are here (to discover this infinite capacity) envy, jealousy, greed and resentment become irrelevant. To master the troublesome four, be content, trustworthy, generous and remember the world is real it is your perception (how you see things) that is the illusion. Remove the maya (illusion) and see the world as it is; an opportunity to learn, know and master your life.

The Troublesome Four - Today we focus on greed

A part of our purpose or being here on earth is to learn how to remove envy, jealousy, greed and resentment. The only way to do this is to become consciously aware of them as they appear in our life and then to consciously work at removing them. We can only do the work when the task presents itself.  Be on the lookout for this troublesome four. It will require discipline, strength, balance and flexibility if you are to master them.  Mastering these you will begin to experience peace and serenity even in a world full of fear.

Today we focus on greed

Greed is the negative side of the soul quality of love and tolerance for others. Greed can mean having excessive avarice for material wealth. It is also desire for power. Greed is never about the obtaining of things or money, but about the power of usurping the freedom and individuality of others. Greed is never satisfied so it tries to dictate, mold, command and usurp.

We all carry a bit of greed. It is a human quality.  Don’t think of it in terms of acquiring and hoarding material goods or money. Greed means to be selfish and this comes from the ego. We all want to do more and be more. What we need is to learn to be content with what we have and who we are. If you reach out and extend beyond your limit you risk getting injured. That is why we need to always practice balance in body, mind and soul. Just remember center everywhere circumference nowhere. Put aside any misgivings about yourself and your life and let’s work to find balance and contentment. If you can find it for a moment you can find it forever.

By finding balance we remove greed. It is recognition that we are not our mind. We are our soul whose goal is to find balance and harmonize with life. This does not mean that we should not enjoy life. We as humans are hardwired for pleasure. We should enjoy every moment of life but never to excess.  Just do it from a place of balance and contentment. Remember not to reach out beyond your soul to physically take, mentally want, or verbally flatter in an attempt to take that which is not yours. Earn your merits, be trustworthy and generous.

What are the Troublesome Four?

A part of our purpose or being here on earth is to learn how to remove the troublesome four. Last week we explored envy and how widespread it is in the world. Envy involves comparison. In a world of unique beings with unique gifts and talents there is no room for comparison. Don’t confuse material acquisitions with success. Many people are good at acquiring things but, lack the ability to soulfully achieve.

The second of the troublesome four is jealousy.

Jealousy is a morbid emotion that looks for anything that will cause suffering.  With jealousy an individual feels threatened by the loss of control over another person or situation. It is a feeling of suspicion and mistrust. Jealousy corrodes and destroys everything it touches. Jealousy is really a feeling of being unlovable and in constant danger of losing.  It is based in uncertainty and fear.  The opposite of jealousy is trustworthiness. It means to trust in your own ability to rely upon yourself to feel loved, honored and worthy. Trust always has the advantage because trust seeks to create good will and not destroy. Replace jealousy with trust in yourself and give up trying to control others or other situations. Find your balance, your strength and be flexible to the ever-changing nuances of life. Trust in yourself.

Love yourself by focusing on your wonderful qualities. Use your trustworthiness to make the world a better place and jealousy will be replaced with prosperity. Remember this; even love focused entirely on another human being cannot bring fulfillment in the long run.  Focus on your self-worth and you will find the fulfillment you seek. Transcending jealousy we find divine and eternal love. This frees us to rejoice in the pleasures of others without envy or jealousy even while dealing with our own disappointments and problems.

Replace jealousy with trustworthiness and the worth of your soul will shine through in all of life’s ups and downs.
